My latest project is a boiled wool knit cap (aka “beanie”). It just finished and am very pleased with the results.
I thought I had an “in progress” picture but I guess not. This is after it was knitted but before boiling. The height shrunk a good 2” while the width shrunk maybe 1”.
I followed this guide:
https://www.stitchbackgear.com/articles/boiled-wool-beanieA few notes.
-There are tons of “how to” videos on doing a basic e-stitch. It’s pretty simple.
-The spacing of the pegs on your loom is important. 4# sized wool (aka worsted weight, as recommended in the guide) WILL NOT work on the 5/8” looms you find at Joann or Micheals or Hobby Lobby. You’ll need a 3/8” loom. 5/8 is for #6 super bulky yarn (which is easier to work with and much faster to make, as each stitch is larger).
-avoid the Boye brand looms. They have crochet hook style pegs that really slow you down. The KB brand on Amazon is a lot better (and available in both sizes).
-The entire thing is pretty cheap. The loom set was $20, and a skein of yarn is maybe $6 or $7.
9/10, will absolutely be doing it again. It’s a fun project with a cool looking result that’s suitable for both daily casual wear and when outdoors in cold weather. And I get to LARP about muh old timey wool that wasn’t made by children in a Bangladeshi sweat shop. Only a 9 because it’s pretty passive and time consuming. I just do it while relaxing in the evening.
