As for charcloth just get an old 100% cotton t-shirt, metal tin of some kind with a lid, make a small hole with a nail on the lid.
Then put in cut up cloth, close it and put it on a fire or use gas stove,, when there's no smoke coming out of the hole its done. Let it cool.
Now you have charcloth which take sparks easily and burns hot.
As for cotton balls, melt candle-ends, soak cotton balls, let them dry and done. They won't stain vs. vaselin and they'll keep in wet well and burn for a while.
