you have to find a good Walmart, usually in a nice town. two Walmarts near me look completely different based on the town they're in, as to be expected. One of them literally isn't even worth going to, the employees have no idea what's going on and they don't organize shelves. I've asked about something they said they have in stock online, and the employee literally said "I dunno, someone probably stole it if it ain't out there." You also have to really inspect rods you buy there because people let kids play with them like lightsabers, half of the rods have fucked up guides from people handling them.

Unfortunately, in my town, both Walmarts are terrible. The next closest Walmart is 30 minutes away in an even larger and more depressed city. The only good Walmart, the only other Walmart, I've been to was in a touristy town in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. It was a good place.

Are Channel Catfish worth eating? Everyone I know who fishes around here says they're disgusting (or assumes they are, I don't know anyone who's actually tried it), but people online say they're good.
I tried a brown bullhead last year and it wasn't great, but it might have been how I cooked it (I think I overseasoned it and then burnt the seasoning; my friend who had the other filet really liked it). Are channel cats similar?

When I lived in Ottawa there were channel cats in the Rideau canal, only Asians fished for em and that waterway was frequently closed due to e. Coli. I never fished em but take that for what it's worth.

I'm from Manitoba, we have channel cats everywhere here (though I haven't caught one yet). Most of our rivers are fairly clean too, at least they are upstream from Winnipeg. Apparently there's even a place that sells fried channel cat in Selkirk, though I've heard it's not great (probably because it's mass produced slop).

Modestly sized channels are as good to eat as basically any other catfish. I wouldn't eat any large catfish, they concentrate environmental toxins as long lived predators of big prey items.

Obviously the cleaner the water, the better the eating.

I kept a few out of a clear, clean river once. Bled them then straight onto ice. I rate them C+. OK taste, but the texture is soft. Reminds me of trout. I would eat them if they were all I could find, but the more classic good eating fish like perch, walleye, crappie etc are better.

In general I think I prefer oily fish to whitefish (though I still love whitefish). Salmon is my favorite of all the fish I've tried, though I've never caught any myself (and likely never will unless I go on a thousand kilometer fishing trip to one of the coasts). I also really like deep fried fish and flakiness seems to make them fall apart in the oil, so less flaky might be good also.

My higher priority is purchasing a Daiwa Presso, a reel to go with it, waders, and wading boots. There's a fishing sale in a month from now (discount uncertain). I used to live in a place that only had trout, so I have eaten a lot of them over the years. Soft, oily meat with a mild flavor. A lot of people say to not fry fatty fish, but I have deep fried plenty and it works fine. It's really important to know they go bad very quickly. Semi-related question: once I actually have a fish I intend to keep, what's the best thing to do with it? Assuming I intend to continue fishing, and also that I'm not able to clean the fish where I'm catching them. Should I put it on a stringer and somehow secure that so they can sit around in the river while I catch more, or should I kill them as soon as I get them, bleed them, and put them in a cooler with some ice?

Trout in specific are really bad fish for stringers. They die quickly on them and if it's warm out they can go bad. For trout, I always hit them over the head (a heavy pliers does the job, rocks work in a pinch but it can be messy) then cut the gills. I bring a scissors for it but a knife works fine too. The pic shows the proper spot, an artery runs through there. Once the blood stops gushing I give it a rinse then place it on ice. When shorefishing I bring along a small cooler bag for this.

All fish can be improved by bleeding, but it matters most in trout and salmon in my experience. Otherwise they bleed a crazy amount while cleaning them and the meat even has blood in it. For larger non-trout fish I take the time to kill and bleed them almost always, but for panfish I mostly just throw them on ice. I personally do not gut fish ever on the water, I feel like the potential contamination from cutting it open is more of a risk than leaving the guts for awhile. I used to gut trout as I kept them, but I never noticed it making a difference.

For clarity, the spot to cut is the strip of normal looking flesh between the two sets of gills running along the very bottom of the fish. You can tell if you did it right because trout will normally gush blood if their heart is still pumping. A lot of other fish seem to have lower blood pressure it takes awhile for them to fully bleed out.

a lot of the "catfish being bottom feeders" is misinterpreted. they are predators just like anything else, not sifting through dead trash all day. smaller channel cats are especially predatory considering they regularly chase down fast moving lures like spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. it's also probably one of the most eaten fish in the states. I'd just not eat really big ones, due to them having decades of accumulation of whatever is in the waterway. at the end of the day, the age and location of the fish is more important if you're worried about bad water quality. people eat crappie who often live in smaller more confined bodies of water with much less current and volume, in theory that should be worse than a roaming catfish in a deep big lake. or eating a bass that sucks on soft plastics for a living. the shit we get from the grocery store is likely far worse than eating a fish from a pond behind Home Depot even. microplastics, pesticides, human contamination, intentional gmo bullshit. Try living in Canada. I probably won't be able to fish for at least another month or two since all the rivers are still frozen (and I have no ice fishing shack or other equipment). And by the time they thaw I bet walleye season will already be closed, and then I have to wait until the end of June to catch them. And by then it'll probably be close to 30 degrees (celsius) outside.
At least pike and catfish don't have closed seasons here. Hopefully I'll be able to get some of those before the water gets too warm (I've always heard that the warmer the water is, the less good the fish will be to eat, and that there's also a higher likelihood of them having parasites).

For panfish it doesn't really matter as long as they can see it.
For most fish, it doesn't really matter.
IF ANYTHING, it really matters on how clear the water is, the color of the water, and how much light is reaching into the deeper parts of the water when choosing a color. Not so much the fish's response to it. Though I have heard that at deeper depths pink and red kind of just disappear but it has to be over 20 feet before that happens.
White and black are the best because of contrast, no matter the condition or depth. If the water is clear I throw fire tiger rooster tails and panfish nail it since it's hard to lose track of when swimming up for a bite. This is true. Water filters out light at different rates depending on the wavelength of the light. Red is filtered the most strongly, blue the least. Past a certain depth a red lure would appear completely black (but that's below about 100 meters). Before that though it just gets less and less vibrant, slowly fading to black by the time you get deep enough.
It's like standing under an old yellow sodium vapor streetlight. All the colors look wrong because they're not being illuminated by white light. Some objects will even look almost totally black.

Rinse and repeat for 5 hours. Wtf am I doing wrong? Sometimes I get bites but most times I set, I get nothing. It feels completely random. I bought a telescopic rod for like $25 because I initially had just a bicycle. Now I have a car and I can fit larger rods. I used a new rod that was given to me for Christmas and it's super light. Found more success with that but I don't know if it was the day or hook or what.

Very possible but it doesn't even feel like they're biting. What way should I be pulling that's not away from them? I cast out and then hold my rod 90 degrees to the right while I feel for bites and nibbles. Then I pull it hard right when I feel a tug or big bite

lol. luckily I'm pretty sure I know why overhead casts are so easy to fuck up for a noob. I'm guessing that when you have tighter spool tension to help when learning, that also makes your startup inertia really fucking bad/delayed, thus your lure just dives straight towards the ground despite releasing at a good angle.

When you feel a bite try dropping it fit a second then setting that'll take the tension off and let them eat it. Also try tougher bait or tipping with tough bait. Shrimp comes off the hook super easy, put a piece of squid or fish bites on there with it as a secondary bait cause if you miss the first hookset and didnt move your rig too far theyll probably come back again for the little bait they missed.

What should I be using for early spring steelhead in michigan right now? There are many factors.
Around my neighborhood there are around 15 ponds ranging from 1 to 10 acres. Only 4 of them actually have anything big in it. Based off google maps the pond with lunkers in it are over 20 years old when the neighborhood was built and the other ponds are around 8 years old. Have nothing but sub 1lb bass. Though the bluegills are very healthy. Nice sized ones.
Big bass take awhile to get big.
25 inches would make the bass around 16 years old, for example. A 15 inch bass would be about 4 years old.
The lake I fish when I go up to my mom's house is an old reservoir that was built in 1950 and stocked generously. It's got some massive fish in it.
Hopefully I'm not stating the obvious.

The jury is out on the reasons it could be. It could just be bad genetics. We haven't done enough studies on this, and I'd doubt we ever will.
They do electroshock data collecting to get a measurement on how many fish are in a lake. Electrofishing it's self isn't that new but doing in it lakes is more recent. Before they mostly did it in rivers and streams. It's what stock services use to estimate that sort of data to know if they need to stock it or not.
I guess anyway, I don't know shit. I just read a lot.

I like the skirted chatterbaits in 1/8th. Shame they don't make it in 1/16th. It's just a touch heavy on my UL when I slap a trailer on it. I've considered cutting the weight in half but not sure what the best approach is without cutting off the bait/skirt keeper.
Never used the flashback. Probably should buy a 1/16th just to keep in the box. Not like they cost very much.

Yea, they do mess up other baits but it's easy to keep them in the original plastic. Since they are so durable, putting them on and taking them off rigs don't damage them too much
The only downside to them imo is that they don't rig well with rigs with the spring that screw into the lure. It's very difficult to screw in the spring.
Also, they have very high buoyancy so keep that in mind

Why can't bassfags just be normal? It's just a fucking fish. I'm one of the only people I know who keeps the occasional bass. Smallmouth and spotted bass are tasty, and smaller largemouths can be decent.

I fish bream and roach but the water is too cold for that here. They're not active and lying pretty still in deeper water (shit's 8 degrees or lower). Tough going. Pike is better right now, but they're also less active and you have to choose your lure and retrieval with some care.

There are shitloads of pike though. I haven't caught one since I was a kid and that was when I was icefishing (only got back into fishing last year and I was never able to get a pike). They taste pretty good from what I remember and from what everyone says, and there are lots of them. You can't keep the biggest ones anyway (above 75cm and they have to be released) so it's not like keeping the medium-sized ones is depriving anybody of the experience.

They aren't line shy, but I generally just use 20lb mono if I'm expecting anything up to around 5 or 6 lbs, if I'm dreaming of a monster I wouldn't be hesitant to use 50lb mono. Ive caught many scores of pike on 20 lb mono and not had them break off, especially with lures. If you're running dead bait and they may get the hook deeper and your line up by their teeth heavier is better. 50lb mono is a great option, it's widely available for cheap and easy to knot unlike 100lb or wire. You can make up hundreds of leaders from a 12$ spool of big game.

Don't buy a tent. Buy warm clothes and a bucket. Tents weren't typically insulated until like 2 years ago, it's mostly for the wind protection. Tents necessitate a sled, a heater, anchors, usually a shovel, it's a waste of time unless you know where the honey hole is. Buy a nice set of coveralls, not necessarily fishing brand ones like the good consoomer you are trying to be, and a big thick balaclava. Tents are for drinking beer in not fishing.

dunno. but I can recommend the $20 Shimano FX. it(and most other budget reels from daiwa/shimano) will last if you fish them properly and don't use them as a winch. meaning play the fish with drag, use lighter line, pair it with a rod that isn't too stiff for it, and take care of your shit when it comes to not throwing it down or stepping on it. The Shimano FX is the same as the Sienna FG but with one less bearing, and I've seen those reels last years, even with no maintenance. that's why I recommend the best budget spinning setup being the Shimano FX and Daiwa Aird-X rod. If you can manage an extra $20, the Aird-X rod completely blows any other $50 out of the water in terms of sensitivity and quality/durability and you can buy it in person at Academy. if not, most budget rods are completely fine and it's the reel you have to worry about if you abuse it. there are multiple different budget options out there that are good and reliable, that's why it sucks to see people waste money on junk when they don't know that they are just another $20 away from buying a respectable setup that will last when taken care of and maintained.

Thanks for the tips friend, I'll look into the reel, but I am a fan of fiberglass rods personally. In my experience with the few graphites I've used, they love snapping tips if you so much as gently set them in the back of the truck a few times too many. I like a rod that will take a little beating over sensitivity/speed desu. Maybe that's just my boomer dad speaking.

If you happen to catch something you can't or don't want to keep and release it, that's fine. But going fishing specifically and only with the intent of catch and release is not only stupid, it's also harmful to the fish and thus to actual fishermen who will actually put those fish to good use.
I wonder how many massive, highly productive fish have died because of boomers handling them for 10 minutes so they can get their pictures. It's like going "hunting" and deliberately missing every shot until the buck dies of heart failure from the fright. And then you don't even eat the buck, you just leave it there. Vanity "anglers" are such scum. You know they're the type to drop the fish or let it flop around the boat because it's funny (or let their kids play with it, if they have kids).
There is no scenario where putting a fish that lives in open water (or flowing water) into a little fish tank bucket thing doesn't stress the fuck out of that fish. Most fish are pretty fucking temperamental when it comes to water conditions. It's even worse for deepwater fish where the act of pulling them to the surface alone is enough to make their fucking organs spill out of their mouths.

With big fish, a properly made release well actually improves release survival, especially after a long fight. It’s a place where the fish doesn’t need to work to maintain orientation while recovering and the water is more oxygenated than the lake. I count myself lucky that every time I’ve gotten on a trophy fish that was too strong for me to swiftly land, it was on a day with cooler water temps and good surface aeration, so my net was good enough, but I also fish from a canoe or a rowboat, not a $80,000 Lund Deep V with a 120 amp alternator on the outboard to run all the pumps and charge the battery bank.

southeast. dunno water temp, it was in a pond so it's probably a little bit warmer than a big lake right now. high 40s-low 50s most likely. first day I've seen fish in the shallows and baby turtles since we've had a few warmer days in a row. even the aquatic mammals are showing up.
