I want to buy a multitool. not a swiss army knife. a multi tool. I want it for EDC and camping duties. mostly regarding to fishing

which one would you choose?

I used to carry one around for construction and good god that fucking thing was handy.

Fuck what other people say about 'you don't need a multi-tool' or they're stupid or what have you, I don't use anything near as much as my leathermen gets put to use- and it's saved me in a pinch or 6 before......

That being said, for /out/ I prefer the wingman. It feels noticeably lighter and still has most of the functionality. It lacks the second knife with serration, but the single knife has a small section with serration on it (Some hate this, I know- I don't mind it a bit) It also doesn't have the saw, but honestly it's kinda too small to put to good use anyways unless you're really crafty with shit. Don't let knife snobs convince you the lack of a 3in saw-blade will have you cutting down trees for emergency shelters and getting firewood......

I got this while I was in Army Basic for 50 bucks. I'll admit I think I only got it cause it looked better than the other multi-tools the PX sold and thought the price meant quality. Luckily, least I think so, I was right. Everyone else got the Gerber multi-tools and about half the Gerbers broke and all of them had crap knifes and/or saws. There was only about 5 people who got the SOG's like me and none of us had a problem with the thing. But I will admit it might be a bit expensive since you said you're just using it for fishing along with it seems that it's normal price is around 120 bucks. Just felt like sharing my experience, didn't know it was that expensive outside a military base

Ideally with an adjustable crescent wrench instead of the pliers, and some sort of allen wrench set. I dont need a blade at all,

I hath a wave but it rarely comes camping/hiking with me. Way too heavy and I've almost never missed it.

But it has to be the wave - saw, diamond file, two blades, etc.

I want to like the skeletool, but no saw kills it. I'd have to also carry some kind of saw, and that'd kill the weight saving.

Usual /out/ kit ends up being a small fixed blade and maybe a vic farmer for the saw and other little bits. Leatherman so heavy.

I honestly don't know why such a horrible shit saw is such a dealbreaker for you. If you need a saw that much, why not bring a saw? Also skeletool is generally all around mehness. It's a nice glovebox warmer I guess if you're not carrying a toolbox anyway.

Also I tend to use a stainless fixed blade (lolya its my mora) for lots of shit cause I get wet and dirty and fuck cleaning a folder out.... but a pliers, awl, file and a small selection of bits would be amazing. A redundant backup blade's not a WASTE of weight in itself I guess, but a mulitool that could handle the tool parts well and NOT worry about being a SAK with multiple blades of any sort would be great.

There aren't any high quality multitool survival knives. At all. I think the best steel you get is 440C in the blade and in any case it'll be a folder, which isn't a survival blade at all.

No fo real, he says the blade doesn't matter. I wouldn't argue too hard for carbon in that shit anyway on account of maintenance. Some folders are sturdy as fuck, too, but they tend towards non-locking mechanisms.

Wouldn't handle all your tool needs as well as a huge fixed blade knife, but it'd handle all the knife needs just fine.

Are you trying to say the Douk is a survival blade? It's certainly not a multitool.

Don't get me wrong, I have one myself, I love it as a backup folder because it takes no space and weighs nothing. But "survival knife"? Maybe we mean something very different with that. In my mind anything that's not a fixed blade isn't a survival knife. They didn't send pilots up with folders, even though that would have taken less space.

People aren't going to like this suggestion, but I recommend this Bear Grylls multi tool. For fishing, camping and edc it does all the things you need. Has a fire starter, a saw for cutting wood, scissors (iirc) and knives, etc. Even a little torch.

Using this tool on its own I've prepared a fish I've caught (with line organised with the tool), gathered wood, lit a fire and cooked the fish.

It's nice and soft on the hands and is spring loaded. 10/10 for fishing and camping.

If you can get over the bg brand you'll love it,

That serrated blade model is crap, but there is also a normal blade version. I guess the breadknife model is for some countries with shitty blade laws, because that is just an illogical, crappy blade that's usually not on the Spirit.

Had it for 8 years now and has been through a lot of duties..camping, carpentry, cleaning, personal defense, surgical procedures, electronics, car mechanichs, etc.

Handy to have indeed. The one thing I can vouche for is its lifetime warranty, every time I have broken a screwdriver bit, especially the precision screwdriver bit all I have to do is go to the local retail shop pay some postage and it gets repaired for free. So perhaps think about that before choosing a different brand.

Look, I own both and I can tell you that the Guppie is a piece of shit. The ergos are awful, the carabiner clip feels flimsy and doesn't close correctly the bulk of the time. The wrench jaws only open up to half an inch and I don't know how much torque I'd trust this thing with. It also has no pliers, which are 9 in 10 more handy than a wrench. The bit holder is constantly coming lose and getting lost in my pack. The LED manages to turn itself on in my pocket all the time.

The Leatherman bits, for being flat, are still highly functional. And you can store what... 10 of them in the normal leatherman case? Given the choice between my Charge (or Wave) and my Guppie, I'll take the charge 10 out of 10.

what have you guys used your mt's for? i have a leatherman wave and i've only really used 4/17 tools for camping:

- scissors: opening some plastic bags
- knife: cutting food, sole camping knife
- saw: cutting thick branches for deadman anchors while snow camping
- can opener: takes forever but works

the screwdriver i might use at home if i didn't have dedicated ones, same goes with pliers.

I have a lightweight MT on my keychain, and that has a bottle opener.

I think the openers do have a place on a multitool (especially if it's combined with, say, a screwdriver like on a SAK or it's also the can opener like on a Leatherman, so there's no downside).

I do agree there's a fetish for putting bottle openers on things that don't need them though. Even my waterproof paddling flashlight opens bottles.

Hey, I haven't said anything bad (or good, or at all) about Leathermans. I was just suggesting the Guppie because it seemed to be what that guy was looking for. I'd have suggested the Spyderco crescent wrench multitool if they still made it. And, I can see needing a wrench more than pliers in certain activities, especially if mechanical devices are involved. Personally, if I was going to EDC something heavy enough to have either a wrench or pliers, I'd go with the pliers, myself, but if he wants a wrench, I'll suggest a wrench.

Personally I just carry a pair of needle-nose vice grips, a bunch of paracord and a 7" fixed blade innawoods.
The amount of weight it adds is no more than if I hadn't taken a shit that morning... so I don't see any issue there.
The vice grips can be used to hold things in place, pull things apart, pry things open. Hell, you could use it as a hemostat if you had to.
The fixed blade knife is strong as fuck, you could strap it to the end of a sturdy stick to make a spear etc.
Neither of them are affected in any significant way by rust, and for the price of a single leatherman I could buy several of each.

Maybe the leatherman, I don't know much about those. And some Danner's are made overseas, but the resoleable ones are definitely not.. As for Benchmade, I think that's pretty much 100% US production.

wave is 8.5 oz, over half a pound. my personal UL multitool would be

held together by titanium housing, hopefully all less than 4 oz, like the vic farmer.

pliers aren't useful for me, but i've heard of other campers using them as a pot holder or to undo knots. still, 4 or 5 tools vs. 17, should be cheap and much lighter. so i can see a version with pliers and one that's like a SAK. with the wave, on the plus side the weight means you can kind of use it to hammer in tent stakes (not as well as a full water bottle though, granted if you're using a UL evian liter bottle you might punch through the plastic). anyway too much gearfagging

I want to buy a new multiool and it comes down to the Leatherman Rebar ($53) vs the Swisstool Spirit X ($87)

I know the Swisstool Spirit X is the superior tool however is it worth the price increase over the Leatherman for the extra scissors?
