how is pike fishing in the spring? I really want to get one this year. had no luck last fall. Walleye season closes in April so I probably won't get to fish for those until late May, and the only other big fish around here are channel cats (which I wouldn't mind catching either). I'll be shore fishing on rivers and maybe (hopefully) a lake. I'm hoping to go as soon as the rivers melt. Good time or bad time to try for pike?
I live in the Canadian prairies btw.

Pretty good, they begin spawning late february/March here in michigan rivers and you can get some big tanks, even tiger muskie. They just say in the muddy shallow parts of the river adjacent long runs. Nothing g like having a big pike squirter its yellow eggs all over you while you unhook it off a rapala. They will evej eat a pink steelhead worm.

Some guys have been pulling atlantic salmon out of the Detroit River and lake st clair tribs these past few weeks.. is nature healing?

Pike is OK all year like >>2706341 said, best in fall and early winter. Over here I just need to vary my approach. You have to take vegetation into account (floating bait is a big hit when you feel you're just doing underwater gardening with other baits - also makes for some really cool action when they jump for it). Pike also start migrating to shallower water in late winter and early spring to spawn. Spawning season is March through June here, which for me are usually poor months. Guess they're too occupied with fish sex to bite my plastic.

If you're going pike fishing in summer and you want to do catch & release, get them out of the water quickly. They can fight themselves to death when it's hot enough.

Maybe it's hard to catch bass and catfish in winter but bluegill are always easy as fuck. Just put a tiny hook out there with a 1inch gulp minnow and you will have those cold fuckers on lock down. Might even get a pumpkinseed if they are around.

kek. That reminds me of when I was a kid and was at the local creek trail with my grandpa (he was a conservationist/nature guide). The fish were spawning so he walked out into the shallow rapids and grabbed one so I could take a picture with it.
It blew a gigantic fucking load onto the ground while I was holding it. I had no clue what semen was of course so I asked my grandpa what happened and he just kind of awkwardly said "oh it's uh, fertilizer" (I knew eggs had to get "fertilized" but not how that actually happened).
I think it was a walleye. Either that or a pike.

I didn't know Salmon were in the Great Lakes. Neat. I wish they came as far inland as the prairies.

That's unfortunate, seems like the rivers will thaw just in time for them to start spawning. Hopefully I can still get a few before summer rolls in and it gets uncomfortably hot out.

I'm planning to keep and eat what I catch (provided I'm legally able to do so and it's big enough to justify eating). But thanks for the tip though, I didn't know they could kill themselves like that.

I'm tempted to go down to the US border and try to catch some bluegill. Can't find them anywhere farther north, and they seem like an incredibly popular fish.

Can't eat the fish where I live but I hear bluegill taste better than crappie. Also they are really pretty looking too. Overall they are fun to catch because they are so willing to bite. You can get them with pretty much anything from corn to peanut butter depending on the time of the year.

I don't fish by a dock I don't have a boat I just sit on the side of a small ass creek and float the minnow down to them and they bite. You have to know where the deep water and hiding spots are. Underwater rock shelves and steep drop off.

Fish are cold blooded and they slow down substantially during the winter. They move out to deeper water where temperatures are more stable. If you’re shore fishing it’s going to be a lot of frustrating days. If you’re on the water it’s about finding those pockets and slowing your presentation down almost to a dead stop. Winter for me is less about numbers and more about quality. I’ve caught my biggest lmb, catfish, bluegill, and striper during winter. Spring is around the corner bro the bite will turn on soon

Hey bros I could use some advice. I have an old goldfish pond shell in my backyard in the ground, about 160 gallons. It’s old, needs some work. New pump, full of debris, etc.
If it’s not cracked and doesn’t leak it’s good, if it is I can just get some of that pond liner and put that down. It’s gonna be a project. I also start a job with ponds and aquariums soon if the interview goes well.

What I want to know, what would be a good baitfish to stock it with and breed in it? I mainly use bait for tarpon. I live in Florida so it would have to be something that would do okay in whatever temps a 160 gal pond with some shade from nearby plants gets to.
I would like to breed shiners but I don’t think they would do well without cold water. I’m thinking maybe Mayan cichlids since they’re already invasive and too wide spread.
But I’d rather something that’s closer to the size and shape of a shiner if possible. Any ideas?

I don’t need hundreds btw, just enough that I could take around 5 baitfish out with me once every 1-2 weeks.

I catch lots of them on one of the most multi-species techniques there is, the drop shot. #6 owner mosquto light hook, smelt color 2.5" Gulp Minnow, about 12" above the weight. pic rel is about average size, maybe slightly bigger than average. I plan to rig up a 4" this spring/summer to target bass and see if bigger catfish will hit it too. If you're just trying to catch different species of fish the 2.5" Gulp Minnows on a drop-shot are hard to beat, you never know what's gonna be on the end of the line.

Any recommendations for affordable travel spinning rods?

I need one for bikepacking so the rod will be strapped on my bike either on the bars or the rear rack. I had a Kastking Blackhawk 2, but it snapped (I think from the second smallest section) while casting last summer. Maybe it was a bad rod or maybe it got damaged from all the bouncing and bending on the bike. Fishing is not my main activity, but it's a nice way to catch some extra food in remote areas especially when camping at a lake.

Telescopic rods are handy since you don't always have to set up the reel and line for them, but I'm open for multiple section rods too. Perhaps a section rod with a hard case would survive the torture better. My lures tend to be in 5-20g range and I'm mostly fishing in freshwater lakes in northern Europe. Would be nice if the packing length was 50cm or less.

I would buy a Diawa Spinmatic 4 piece in your situation. I have two actually, in different weight ratings. Great for leaving behind the seat in my little truck or for backpacking trips, or for biking to the river.

Get a Presso if you want a nicer rod, the Spinmatic is a cheaper rod. They also sell one in a carbon fiber case if you think you need it. I think a hard case is unnecessary weight, but you might be more of a retard gorilla than I am and prefer the confidence associated with a hard case.

Also meant to mention, I normally leave my 4 peice rods rigged, usually even with a lure on. It’s not hard to line the bits up right and reel in the extra line, you just need to open the bail before you try to assemble the rod. I do this for safety, especially when canoeing. I once had to go free diving for a rod section in 20 feet of 50 degree water, if you’ve got a lure on and you leave them rigged, anything you drop is still attached to the rest of it.

I've seen that ultralight rods are best suited for things like parish and trout but what are light rods best suited for? And whats a good length for them? those ratings really depend on the specific line of rods. they can vary quite a bit. you have some medium lights that are a light rod, ultra lights that are a medium light rod, etc. but to answer your question it's more about the weight lures you plan to throw than the fish you're targeting. for really light lures, the ultra light rods will be able to load them up and throw them with less effort and greater distance, but a light rod can usualyl still throw them effectively. as for length, it completely depends on your style of fishing and more importantly where you're fishing. shorter rods are better for shorter more accurate casts, like when you're fishing small streams with lots of low hanging trees where you need to do lots of underhand and side arm casts to aim for the other side and throw the lure underneath low hanging branches. long rods are better for longer casts where you are in open areas to swing the long rod around, and for certain techniques that require you to hold your rod over the stream to delicately present a jigging technique. the shorter rods are more commonly used for bank fishing small streams and the long ones can be used fine while wading. a goo compromise is a 6ft on the shorter end or a 6ft6 on the longer end. short rods are also obviously lighter and easier to accurately cast with one arm too.

Yeah, it shouldn't be needed, but then again my last rod was just strapped as is on the front and it snapped. Granted it snapped while casting and not on the first cast either, but it made me wonder if all that bouncing and tension from the straps had damaged it. I guess if it's a <50€ rod the risk of breaking is acceptable, but a fancier rod might make me think twice.

probably. the creek is surrounded by farmland for basically its entire length. probably from runoff.
there used to be lots of fish in there too, but nowadays there seems to be pretty much nothing but tiny worm-infested walleyes.

yep. the nearby lake is basically a noxious cesspit thanks to all the fertilizer causing massive toxic algae blooms every year. when i was a kid there were still some summers where you could swim in it, but now it's closed to swimming basically all the time.

Where I'm at a chemical plant is right on the edge of a river. Less than a mile away is a pond fed by that river. This pond is in a park, and children fish there. It stinks and you can always see an oily film on it. At the shallows there is a rusted barrel not a foot deep, sunk in the mud. I can only imagine what happened. There's a few spots I can recommend in general:
Cedar River at Palisades, right after the rapids where the old dam used to be, great for soaking bait in the calmer flats
Lake MacBride, never gotten skunked there (unlike Palo Lake)
Cedar River where Indian Creek empties into it I think is alright
The trout stream in CR holds some decent trout, although fishing for stocked trout feels like cheating
in general, I've found the Cedar River to be very hit or miss, which is annoying, but if you just want to soak bait, for a long enough period, there's bound to be something that will eventually check it out

The Brits have a low tech way of doing it with a float and a sinker, I think they call it the depth finder rig. You just probe with that set to different depths to get a rough idea where drop offs are. Honestly it's kind of a nonsense thing you can look at a depth map to do 95% of the work instead of spending hours casting lines with no chance of hooking anything

I want to get back into fishing. I recently found an old Ozark Trail collapsible fishing pole my dad got me 12 years ago. I plan on taking it on my first backpacking day trip of the year come April, as there are many ponds on the trails I frequent.

What all do I need to do to get it back into action? I will be replacing the line due to its age, but need to know what kind of artificial baits will work best for my expected game (bluegill). I will just be catch and release fishing for the moment.

Is drop shot a rig that you can use live bait with? Almost every resource I've seen online only goes into using artificial with it. Is live just not effective with it? I'm mainly wanting to target bluegill and catfish with it, maybe some bass.

I'm sure that if you use minnows or something similar, regular dropshot hooks will do just fine. I've tried it with worms before, but they came off too easy. I'd try using a wormkeeper hook instead of the standard dropshot hooks if you'd want to give it a shot too.

Yes, you can even tie a drop shot with multiple hooks, then you can animate your bait or just let it soak. You can even scale it up to bank or pyramid sinkers that weigh multiple ounces and big 3/0, 6/0 or even 9/0 hooks for salt water big game, of you could drop it down to a 1/16oz and a #10 hook for sunfish.
Dont forget to change hooks, sometimes you might want an octopus hook, other times bait holder, other times circle, and other times Aberdeen. Sometimes when you get a nibble you might have to drop your rod tip to give them slack and let them eat for a second before you strike

the whole point of a drop-shot is to jig a bait near the bottom with precise depth control, that's why it's focused on soft plastics, but you can put a cricket/worm on it and it will work fine. a minnow will just struggle to swim against the weight though. if your goal is to use worms/crickets near the bottom and/or eliminate fish swallowing hooks, it will work great for that. just make sure to keep the line tight by having your rod tip high. also best to use lighter wire hooks that are very sharp, that way you don't even have to react to a bite, it simply "sets itself" every single time. I have them from size #6 up to 1/0. you won't be dissapointed if you use those for drop-shot rigs. the only potential downside to them is that the smaller sized ones have very tiny barbs, but that's only an issue with bass because they can shake off if your rod is too stiff. it's a non-issue with anything else, and it makes rubbery catfish mouths very easy to unhook. pic rel is on a #6 hook. that's probably the best size for large bluegill/sunfish and perch, just use smaller pieces of worm and rig them like you would a jighead.

Knee high Wellington's will go a long way in a creek. Usually you can find a place to ford with 5 minutes of walking if you need to get to the other bank. Anybody able to ID? Caught reef fishing in the FL Keys on shrimp fishbites, probably 20-30ft of water on a chum slick. Was also catching a lot of snapper and bluestriped grunts. Maybe a Bermuda Chub? The illustration in my guide book doesn't have the weird knob over the eyes like these did though.

I was catfishing today with 40 lb Powerpro braid. I was throwing a chunk of shad on a gamakatsu octopus hook, and on my second cast, I lost my hook. I tied a palomar knot. I noticed when I was trying on the hook in the first place that my knot slipped out of the eye of the hook. Obviously, I could use mono to entirely avoid this problem. I'm just wondering if this is a fluke or something I can and should avoid in the future.

floating is by far the most natural and it will trigger a frenzy. using the smallest and lightest wire hook you can get away with helps them to float and retain a natural movement/presentation since you're not damaging them as much. I used to fish crickets and grasshoppers like this as a kid more than anything else. yes. obviously the futher you cast out, the closer to the bottom your hook will be due to the angle of the line from rod tip to the weight. so if you want to target an area further out, tie your hook higher above the weight than you would for close range bank fishing. it does tend to work better with close range fishing though since your line is more vertical. I usually target areas no more than about 12ft out. also, not good to cast a drop shot in an area that will have lots of snags, like on banks with overhanging trees where there will probably be fallen branches underneath. most of the fish will be shallow soon anyways so you can bank fish effectively with a drop shot. I'd start with having the hok at least a foot above the weight, maybe even up to 20 inches above the weight. I rarely ever fish it less than 12 inches because that's essentially right on the bottom due to line angle when you cast it out far enough..another tip is to use line strong enough to bend out the hook you're using. in the event you get snagged, you will at least get your weight back and probably everything.

I was looking at just swapping from regular to light since I mainly fish with live bait and thought it would help keep them alive longer. The light wire is harder for me to find, so I didn't know if the difference between the two was worth the hassle of finding them or if they would hold up as well as the regular mosquitos.

I think the light are definitely worth it. the normal ones are more intended for bass and larger fish. I don't have any issues in terms of strength with the light for freshwater fish under 5lbs, and that's with the tiny #6. naturally as you go up in hook size they get even stronger due to increased guage. that makes the light version even more appealing over the standard ones when you're talking size 1 and 1/0. I usually order mine from Discounttackle and pick up several packs at a time since their shipping is very cheap compared to most sites and the price is cheaper to start out with. usually ends up being the same price out the door as picking them up in person. they're extremely popular though because certain sizes are often out of stock. I love em though, the point is so fine it will go through your finger and you won't even realize it. lol

What are your guys thoughts on people kayak fishing ice out lakes right now in the 40's water temp with nothing but jeans and a hoodie ? To me its pretty reckless, I think those people are vastly underestimating how difficult its going to be to swim in that condition. Context matters, a super shallow lake you can walk out will really suck but is just minor danger what they are doing is too much imo.

I'm going to buy a rod and reel from my local store. The rod I'm going to buy is a 4 piece Daiwa Presso, and the reel is uncertain. This is going to be a creek fishing setup for trout and panfish. I'm thinking about putting on 6 or 8 lb mono on. Using such light line concerns me, so I don't want to drop below 6 lb. Plus, I hate line coils, so I'm willing to use a larger reel if they will be a problem on a smaller one.
In the store, I was shown various 1000 size reels, and I liked the Daiwa Regals the best. Both were $69.99 but one was XH, which I probably won't benefit from in creek fishing. I have a 200 XH Legalis, which I like. Should I look into something other than a Regal? I like my local store, and they are going to have a sale (20% on reels, I think). Plus, I'm pretty sure these are 2024 models, since the XH option isn't available in other years, it seems. Is 1000 a good size, or should I go up to 2000 to avoid the coils.

the Daiwa LTs have deep spools so even the 1000 holds a lot of line. going up just means you have to put more backing line or spool up a ridiculous amount of line. that small diameter of a spool has never been a problem for me but I don't use anything that has bad memory. 4-6lb Trilene XL or 4lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid. After you've used it a couple of hours the memory is almost completely gone. the Daiwa tiers are Fuego>Exceler>Legalis>Regal>Revros. the Regal just has more bearings for whatever reason. make sure you're not getting ripped off on an older model since they all got updated.

Thanks for the insights. I know I don't need Fuego because I fish freshwater. I think that Exceler is a lot less smooth. Then, I can't tell a difference between the Legalis and the Regal. The Regal 2000 had something like 3 ball bearings, and the Regal 1000 had 9 + 1. I think the employee said it had steel ball bearings, unlike cheaper ones, which could be plastic.
I'm glad to hear that memory from the original spool goes away quick. I'm concerned about it developing memory on the reel. All I know is that I hate coils with a passion. I think I found some Daiwa plastic reel handle pieces on Amazon last year. Does anyone have a recommendation for replacements? I'd like to have a couple spares, since I foresee getting it wet and taking it apart.

I've told you twice: it's for recreational fishing. Allows already-big pike to get even bigger.

Even if you fish strictly to put food on the table, catch-'n'-release should be the least of your worries. That just means there's more big fish for you to eat. If anything, you have less competition.

No but you see, fish don't reach megalodon size this way. Once they're big enough, they can be taken out of the rotation by someone fishing for food. That's why people are attracted to my country for fishing: we have stupidly big fish even in smallish waters, because of fairly strict catch-'n'-release policies.

Not saying either one is more valid than the other. I understand both fishing for food and fishing for sport/recreation (just going for big game fish - shit's exciting as hell). I'm just saying it makes no sense to get anal about catch-'n'-release because of some imaginary scenario.

On a related note: I've seen much more kids fishing recently than ever. Often unaccompanied or with friends. Seems like they're taking an interest in fishing again, which I'm happy to see.

I use mostly spinning setups. From what I read, the winds were around 19 mph so it's not like I was standing in a hurricane but it was enough to make the water choppy and make casting/tying knots a huge pain. What rig is best for windy days like this? I'm thinking of just tying up a drop shot the next time it's blowing like that and hoping for the best.

The best type of fishing to do in such conditions is baitfishing because the lead helps with casting, and you aren't going to be casting that much. I would imagine that you can bring a few rods with you in your state. If everything goes well, you can be reeling a fish in on one of your rods every few minutes.

I'd unironically reccomend the echo gecko kit, its marketed towards kids butbits actually a good fiberglass rod and itll be as indestructible as a fly rod really can be. Glass is also forgiving and easy to learn on and better for fighting fish on because its more bendy than graphite.

Sustained 19 mph wind is too windy for most types of fishing. Even fishing with heavy saltwater lures it would either need to be a favorable direction or you find a spot protected from the wind.

Where I live possession of crayfish is 100% illegal because of invasive crayfish. Can't trap them, can't transport them (even dead ones), can't cook them. I've never actually eaten one but I might have liked to try it some day.

I guess there are two tiers here, the regular fishing license and the commercial fishing license. Can't sell anything, even if it's prepared, if you only have the regular license (you can give it away for free though, unless you're a native american, then you can't give any fish to non-natives if you've caught them under your status rights). Not sure what the process or fees for a commercial license are like though.

On a 5 weight rod if the extra weight of glass is an issue you're a pansy
Slower action and line speed doesnt matter inside 60 feet and actually gives more delicate presentations
Sensitivity isnt much of an issue in fly fishing I've found, you're either floating a dry fly (visual) nymphing (visual) or swinging/stripping streamers and wet flies where the take is seldom subtle.
Reverb is just the rod whipping back and forth after your stop and it's not a huge issue.
I'm biased in favor of glass, though, the majority of my fly rods are glass.

Do people eat catfish where you live?
Where I am we have tons of big channel cats (as well as reasonably sized bullheads) but nobody eats them and they generally seem to consider them to be a trash fish and I have no idea why.

I hate to say it but wooly buggers are the best fly to learn to tie as a beginner. They teach thread control, proportions, ribbing, counter ribbing, and if you stray from normal chenille theyll teach dubbing techniques, too.
Zebra midges are easy but also easy to fuck up, classic hair wing streamers are fun and I tied a lot of those as a newbie, and dry flies are cool but hackle is expensive. If you really want to tie dries, you can do almost all of them with grizzly, brown, and black, or some combination of them. Also if you get half capes they cost less and you'll find out what feathers you really use. No one beats Whiting farms dry fly hackle.
I learned to tie on youtube, watch people like Tightline productions, gunnar brammer, the feather bender, Kelly gallop, in the riffle, fly fish food, and countless others. Tie patterns that look fishy to you, and dont just watch the pattern, watch the technique.

Thanks anon, a bunch of the creeks I fish have signs about endangered fish species on the trail, and this guy completely inhaled my size 1 spinner and didn't look good on release.

Despite what trout guys might say bass definitely wise up to common presentations, I've been to ponds where I know for a fact there are tank bass in there and they won't hit any of the popular lures I throw, then I try something like an tiny kastmaster and they bite. Thanks for the info. I attended a couple talks by the fly fisherman Matt Supinski. They were okay, but he mentioned some kind of fly invented by Vince Marinaro that you could tie with your hands. Do you know what fly this is?
What are the not-so-obvious expenses and pieces of kit I need for trout fly fishing? If I choose to get a rod now, I want to know how much I will be having to spend.

If your just fishing dry flies your only variable cost is the fly themselves, tippet, and possibly leader. Reel and fly line should last. Fly fishing is a lot more minimalist compared to spinning or baitcasters.

You'll need leaders and tippett (I tie my own leaders out of Berkley trilene, amd use the same for tippett)
You can get away with a handful of flies but more is more when it comes to having flies on hand. Pheasant tails and hares ear nymphs in a couple sizes are nessecary, a few wooly buggers in a few colours is mandatory, black, white, and olive are the standard colors
Parachute Adams are good to have, as are foam hoppers

You'll want a few sizes of strike indicator (fancy yh talk for bobber)
Some split shot
You'll want some dry fly floatant for anything that you want to float that isnt foam

For tying you'll need a vise (the super aa vise on amazon was my first vice)
Bobbin, thread, scissors, and any materials required for the pattern you wish to tie. The way I do wooly buggers you'll need a suitable hook, marabou, krystal flash, ice dub, schlappen or hackle, 8-12lb mono, thread, lead free wire, and optionally a bead.
Pheasant tails need pheasant tail, small or medium copper or gold wire, and peacock herl.
Hm, hidden costs.
Waders, possibly.
You're going to burn through flies and tippett until you learn to cast without tying knots and catching trees, and until you learn to bounce bottom instead of snag bottom.
Poly leaders can be worth having
I keep a hook sharpener on hand for when I roll or blunt hook points on rocks
Hand warmers depending on season
Fly boxes
I'd say expect to spend 150-200 on a combo and another 150-200 on gear

Nah, I slam bass on just about anything that moves. Anecdotal I know. I think in terms of bait it's a solved problem. Most lures are more for the kind of water you're fishing in more than the fish itself 90% of the time. You wouldn't use a rattletrap around an area with lots of cover kind of thing. Lure makers aren't gonna tell you that, but bass really aren't picky.

Listen to skid and buy an echo kit. I bought a rod and reel and spent $100 over what I really needed to. Better than 1000 but still money that could be put else where. In the words of Brian Flechsig: "your rod is just an expensive pointing stick". As long as it's reputable, you're good.

I know a lot of it could be mental, placebo-type stuff and I'm not that good at fishing, but from sight-fishing bass in clear water sometimes they will ignore senkos and other very hyped lures and you change tack and 3 bass will chase it out of nowhere

Love these little guys. Such vibrant colors, made coming out worth it even if it was the catch. Also think I saw a cruising shad at the same pond but didn't know what to throw at him fly wise. Didn't care about the green drake I haphazardly tossed by him, just kept on. Wasnt hungry or didnt like me around or the fly. Wondering what else I could toss next time I see him.

Piscifun makes a sling bag that I've been using for the past few months and I would definitely recommend it. It's light weight and feels pretty durable so far. I don't typically carry a whole lot of tackle with me, so I got the smaller size. It fits a couple tackle containers plus all my line, weights, and has enough space for a bottle of gulp minnows. Only issue I have with it is it has a buckle that goes over the front that seems unnecessary and gets in the way a bit but it's not a huge hassle. I got it off of amazon.

I carry a cheapo walmart field and stream back pack I bought for 12 bucks back in 2014. I have a 3700 box in it and it's fine.
I use my large tackle box for home storage. The 3700 holds more than enough for a trip.
The bag the other anon posted is what I'd upgrade to once this bag dies.
