I've never understood this. When I've gone on longer hikes, mostly at big bend, I usually plan on 12-16 miles or so being about the limit for the day, because that's as much water and snacks as I feel like bringing with me, and I have to limit it to like 8 hours max on the trail to have time to drive back to my campsite. How could someone who's backpacking all day cover less distance than that? Are you just walking really slow? Or do you only walk for part of the day? I would expect that if you're not doing anything other than walking most of the day, you should be covering close to 20 miles. That would be like 12 hours of walking a moderate pace

I don't walk all day when I backpack. I get up, make a little breakfast, pack up camp, then start walking. I take short breaks throughout the day to snack, hydrate, and stretch. By the time I've covered 6-8 miles a start looking for a new place to set up camp with plenty of daylight left. Then I pitch camp, lay around for a bit, maybe read a book or try to fish before I cook a little dinner and turn in. My pack is usually like 30-40lbs and I'm not in amazing shape so I just try to enjoy myself. I'm not a mile crusher. Even so 24 miles in 4 days is a casual pace.

It was six fucking miles and 1800' of gain, I would have been there in an easy 2.5 hours, when it was still in the cool of morning. These ditsoids took all day and suffered under the daystar and the dust, all because they're fat, weak and lazy. Her tits aren't that great anyways.

I’m guessing there was a miscommunication with their contact, and the hikers decided to head back to their car. They probably would have been fine, and just gone a day without food. It would suck but they probably wouldn’t have died. The helicopter showed up, which they weren’t expecting, and gave them the option of hiking for two days without food after a shitty hike or taking a 30 minutes helicopter ride (which they’ve probably never done before) back to the parking lot so they could drive to Five Guys.

I primarily hike on the East Coast so my experience may differ from others. 15 miles is on the lower end of "hiking for a day" if you're backpacking for distance and don't need to factor in the drive in or the drive back. 6-8 miles a day is perfect if you're going on a chill trip but that shouldn't be your physical limit unless you're adjusting to altitude or going through particularly bad terrain or weather.

That article makes it sound like they only made it 8 to 10 miles, but consider they were doing a through hike and probably left their vehicle at their destination and got a lift to the starting trailhead, meaning they had done 16 miles or so. The mountains in the wintertime are punishing terrain and while I'm not saying these women made wise decisions, there's probably more to the story.

Elevation limits what one can do in a day much more in the cascades than distance, especially when backpacking. 15 or 20 miles on flats is nothing, 5 miles is a hell of a workout if it's 5k ft up with a full pack.

The core in the enchantments is absolutely brutal in the winter. it took them too long to do that leg. At colchuck, they could have Basically just hiked gently down slope. but this isn’t 15ml a day terrain for most people

I would have assumed he'd realise he couldn't do it then double back to his car. 15km at around 4km/hr (it's close to flat, there's not much elevation gain) is close enough to 4 hours, but double it because he's wearing snowshoes and carrying a heavier pack, so he's about 8 hours from his car. He says there are 6 hours of walking time, so he can either push on after dark, break down his camp in the morning while it's still dark, or camp an extra day and dig into his extra calories. All well and good, doesn't need to call SAR.

Now that I look at it closely I'm less confused by what happened. He seems to have been doing under 1km/hr, made it 15km by the third night, realised on day 4 that he was fucked if he didn't speed up, and called for help. Mistake was not turning back on day 2 combined with moving incredibly slowly.
