If I'm leaving cell service it means I don't want to be connected to the grid at all. I'm comfortable managing risk knowing there's no possibility of rescue and relying on my skills in an emergency or otherwise. You know you can just use your phone and bring a battery backup, right?
The phone can call a satellite in an emergency, it can load your position on pre-downloaded maps without any cellular service too. And, best of all, you can download offline maps even in the car on the way to a hike if you change your mind, or something is closed.

I was taught how to use a compass and map as a kid. I can still do that, and judge my pace to know how far im going over time. Still use one. Easy to just check a phone. The real reason I have it is because I've had two different people Im with have medical emergencies over the years and I do a lot of high elevation exposed scrambles or off trail. 99% of the time its so my parents who are too old to hike can follow along and we have something to talk about.

I carry my inReach even on the safe streets of Japan. You never know when some pozzed, indoctrinated individual chimps out and you are cornered or forgien national glowies attempt to abduct you.
I even have the remote function on my garmin watch so I can auto alert if it my EKG flatlines for more than 5min and also erase all personal data on my watch/inreach.

I think of it like a health bar/pager in a video game.

The SOS and sat comm stuff is. The watch integrations will work as long as Garmin maintains the apps. The functions on the watch itself will work without Garmin until you can't recharge the battery.

Yeah, but you can't send messages. Garmin has preset messages which are free or charges 50 cents for a custom one. If my car broke down or something I'd rather just text a friend or family member for help. Nice to be able to let people know if you'll be late as well.
