Invest in a doggy backpack. Make them carry their own food and water. Less for you to carry.

Remember, it's still winter. You need to check your pup's paws for frost. Make sure you clean your dogs paws after a walk, the salt and chemicals are all over their little feeties. Or buy booties.

what would be a good dog breed for a first time dog owner who grew up around dog? preferably a dog that could o hiking with me. nothing too extreme

labs are very easy to train. They are food motivated, so treats while training will make things very easy. They are very compassionate adventurers.
German shepherds are good for guarding and protection, especially when you have a great bond. But they are very hard to train especially if you adopt after a certain age. First time dog owner? get a lab, black and yellow are the easiest. chocolates are a little hyper but they are the closest when it comes to bonding.

Also German shepherds (one of my fav types) are protective over their family, owner (pack). They can become aggressive towards others if not trained properly. But you will have a companion who will never leave your side.
Same with a lab, except they aren't great protectors. They make good guard dogs but are known to get all cute and cuddly when an intruder comes into the house.
