Fishing Tackle

Is there anybody generous enough to give me a list of tackle I should have? Particularly lures for freshwater fishing from 1 to 15 feet, with grassy bottom. Species are LG Mouth Bass, Chain Pickerel and various panfish, among others. I mostly fish from a canoe.

I've never really put a tackle box together - I've always just kept a few spinners and a bag of rubber worms on hand. Could somebody give me a general idea of what I should get? A variety of everything? A variety of soft baits, and a few basic spinners and top water lures?

Any tips for tackle selection will be appreciated; I know it's more of a "find what works and go with it" type of deal, but I know there's some wisdom to be shared.

OP, I don't use softbaits often so I'm no help there, but I know hardbaits. Well, I know the hardbaits that I use often and have results with. I use plugs when chasing large gamefish (Bass and Pike mostly) because I like the durability and that's what I grew up using. My dad and my uncles primarily fish with plugs, so I got in the habit at a young age. However, there are a few key details to observe when picking any sort of artificial bait: what is the forage base, and do i have a lure that can match it?

Having a bunch of brightly colored lures in crazy colors can work, but it can be a crapshoot too; sometimes, those colors turn on fish to feeding, and sometimes you can throw them for hours without a single bite. However, when building a basic tacklebox, there are a few standbys that usually produce well. I always have both black and silver patterns and black and gold patterns of plugs (I'm a Rapala guy, courtesy of my old man). One of those will always be close to a forage species, with silver for clear water and gold for murky water as the usual standard.

My suggestion is to identify forage species, and try to match known patterns from the area where you primarily fish. For example, I live in Wisconsin and do the vast majority of fishing I do is in state. One of the most abundant forage fish the state has is Yellow Perch, and as such, I keep several Perch patterned lures on hand. But, I do annual trips with my family up to the boundary waters, where crayfish are on the menu for Smallmouth Bass and Walleye, and when up there, orange and red lures get a lot of time in the water. Figure out what may work in your area (local anglers are fucking indispensable for this).

The other issue with plugs becomes depth. Any dude who's been fishing for a while knows that there are plugs for damn near every depth. When attempting to pick a depth, primarily go with your method of fishing (you specified between 1 and 15, I know). If you fish mostly from shore, roll shallower lures to prevent hangups, and if you fish from a boat, try to get a variety. Most plugs should have an approximate depth that they retrieve and run at, and spinners and softplastics all depend on the countdown and the retrieve speed.

Jigs, finesse work well with most beginner gear. Can't go wrong with a small craw/beaver trailer.
square bill crankbaits
spinnerbaits, don't go cheap. Booyah, gamakatsu, war eagle, or strike king
rattle traps work well on submerged grass lines.
Overall where you put your bait matters more than anything. LG Bass relate heavily to structure so find visible structure and cast to it for a bit then move on to the next piece of visible structure or cover. Don't worry about fishing past what your can visibly see without electronics as you're fishing blind unless you want to drag a Carolina rig for hours looking for a good stump or something.

Don't waste time with topwater unless you see Bass visibly busting top water.

Do you think plugs and other minnow look-alike baits are more effective than spinners which use flash / vibration to attract? They're both intended to appear as a minnow, but plugs appear more natural; spinners evoke more of an impulse response.

I'm loyal to the Mepps Aglia spinner (white skirt with a bit of red). I swear it's magic - but I want to build a kit of mimic baits instead of flash.

There are lots of crayfish in that water system- should I try a few different styles of baits that mimic crayfish?

Also lots of frogs, are those topwater frog lures any good? I've never had much luck with topwater lures kike Jitterbugs and such - even though I'd really like to.

I know its not much, but i haven't ever not caught anything with gary yamamoto's yamasenko wacky rigged right through the middle i usuially use 5,6,or 7 inch and bass seem to love them just go out and have fun

The worm essentially looks to a fish like its trying to get to the surface, than said ohhhh shit.. and is now trying desperately to get to the bottom and bury itself.
Thanks to that cone weight rising and falling on the line.

The fish usually hits just as you are lowering the tip and waiting.. which is the perfect time since there is no drag to spook them and seems like an easy meal... till you start to raise up and reel again... this time with a fish. Usually a very aggressive hit too.

It takes practice, but its allot more fun then just sitting around waiting for something to happen or reeling in at a constant speed/drag.

Ask at a local tackle shop m8. Depending on where you live, some things will work great while others won't work at all.

Now you're on to something. There are 3 bites that you can get from a bass.

1.feeding
Bass will actively forage for food everyday however when and how long depends on the water, conditions, and forage. Natural presentations work best here

2. Reaction
Bass are almost entirely instinctual and have little thought behind their actions. They set of a strike zone based on the conditions stated above and will react on anything that comes within that strike zone with the right action. ( their strike zone may be only a few inches on a cold day with dirty water to 20+ foot on a warm overcast day with clear water.

2.Territorial
Ever seen a fishing episode on fistfight beds? piss them off and they bite, simple.

Anything with noise/flash/water displacement can get reaction bites as well as feeding.

For example, spinnerbaits do provoke reaction bites when fishing against current as Bass face in the direction of the current and anything with flash sneaking up behind them will provoke a reaction as their lateral line and smell can't detect thing down current as will as it can up current. However on a windy rip rap bank a spinnerbait can naturally imitate small shad or minnows they left the cracks of the rocks to seek refuge from rough water beating against them. Bass actively forage windy banks with cover looking for these easy meals.
