I go spearfishing. Tropical water, no wetsuit needed. Its a lot of fun. I go down about 15m max. More gets exhausting fast and I'm kinda paranoid about shallow water blackout too, because I go mostly solo.

Before i took the course some /out/ist told me "you can learn everything you need to freedive from youtube". I called his bullshit and took the course and I'm glad I did because:
1. initially I struggled with equalization and it was good to have some pros help me overcome it
2. you are introduced by professionals to the different disciplines within an established sport, as opposed to dicking around alone in a snorkel
3. they taught yogic breathing and meditation as part of the class. Not everyone's cup of tea but I consider that knowledge a skill unto itself
4. by day 5 I was able to dive to 75 feet, in no universe would I have been able to accomplish that on my own
5. My form in the water is dogshit, it was helpful to have pros around to point out how I could be more efficient and thus consume less oxygen
6. nothing I read online mentioned anything about shallow water blackout, I would never have known it was a thing.
7. I can now use my cert to dive with schools in many exotic places around the world

My mom dated a rich guy with a boat when I was a teen, I got into this sport to enjoy the coral without a diving cert. I managed to breath train myself at night to the point where I could manage 3 minutes. It meant a different thing underwater, however. Sometimes I would black out and have to blindly find my way to the surface.

You seriously only get to 20 seconds? Are you active at all?
You get better by practicing. Couple of deep breaths, then hold it as long as you can. Repeat a couple of times. Do that daily, the more the better. Time your breathholds and try to get better each day.
Also endurance training. Running, biking, swimming, whatever. Do a morning run and 3 breath training seasons a day and you'll probably be at 2 minutes in a few months.

I’m not sure if there are many other deep lakes…I think there’s one that’s literally called “Deep Lake” up in the Flattops Wilderness Area but I dont know how deep it actually is, and that is 10k+ ft. It’s also frigid cold for 10 months of the year and only bearable for the other two. I gone in the rivers (without being near a hot spring) a few times already this year and it’s a few mins max because of hypothermia.

If you are ever out near Vegas, go south of the Hoover Dam to Lake Mohave, you can access it from Needles, NV, it’s desert warm water (near the surface at least), I think it’s like 300ft deep, very clear water, and it was just a normal canyon with a river at the bottom before the dams were built and it filled up, so there are normal rock formations and old remnants of western mining towns down there

It's more of a crossbow with thick rubber bands accelerating the projectile. You can use a spear (on a rubber band) to stab fish hiding in holes or for very slow prey but it's very situational.

If you got decently warm water, fins, mask and snorkel is plenty. If you have cold water, you want a wetsuit and a weight belt. Otherwise you will lose a lot of body heat and energy to the water and it'll severely limit your time in the water and duration of dives.
