In terms of gear, I started out with my whole setup as cheap bits that I picked up off friends, parents or bought myself secondhand.
I eventually got tired of the heavy pack and shabby gear that only half worked so I gradually started replacing it.
I now have a bunch of good stuff. Most expensive is the tent. I'm surprised people are saying they can't see the difference between a cheap tent and an expensive one. For me, it's the difference between in still being standing when you get up in the morning.
Snowfall and high winds can be problematic when camping exposed even at low altitudes, 3000 feet+, and with a cheap tent theres always the chance it'll collapse under snowfall and you will suffocate.
Second would be my sleeping bag, will be sending that to some specialists to get more down added, I guess that's a way of going cheap cause to buy the equivalent bag new would be ~£500.
