I have tall grass in my backyard but I only get one or two ticks a year and that's because I set up a fence to keep deer out, starving the ticks. I also have a bunch of log piles for snakes to live in which keep the rodent population in control.
Poultry are helpful obviously but sometimes you need to attack the problem at the root.
