Before the digital era people were bringing instruments for hikes every now and then out of necessity if anything. If you wanted music in a remote place, there was no other way than that or chanting.
Nowadays you can have an entire discography of your favorite band on your phone and play it on a speaker that can hold charge for hours and have pretty good sound quality.
And yeah, I'd definitely listen to my favorite album on a speaker by the campfire than listening to some wannabe hippie trying to play guitar without success.
