Has anyone here experienced drinking rain water for some period of time ?

I read everywhere that it is not fit for drinking, which I believe but I wonder 'to what degree' ?

FYI it is actually 'iLLeGaL' to drink in my country

What? Why? Of course rain water is safe to drink (with the possible exception of cities downwind of some truly polluted Chinese hellhole). The only chance you'll get sick is if the method you're using to collect the rainwater is contaminated. .

Rainwater here is contaminated with dust filled with arsenic. Most rainwater is fine to eat, just settle out any sediment.

Basically this, but your roof or the air can be a source of contamination. It's usually recommended that you use rainwater for irrigation rather than directly consuming it. I'm sure all you would have to do to make it potable is pass it through a sand and charcoal filter.

It's pretty simple:
If the rain water is collected directly from the sky via a sterilised/clean way, it's safe to drink.

If the water is collected as run-off from anything like a roof, pipes or trees etc, it needs to be filtered and/or purified before consumption, because it can have all sorts of shit in it.

Think about where you're collecting the rain, and what it's coming in contact with as part of your collection system. Collecting it off of your mossy, leafy, bird shit covered, asphalt shingled roof is probably not ideal. Likewise think about what pollutants could be mixed up with the rain in the atmosphere. If you live in close proximity to a large airport, or a major interstate, there's likely going to be more pollutants in the air that the water vapor will mix with as it condenses into precipitation.

There is your answer. Distilled water can lead to defencies in minerals.
Of course, you need to only drink distilled water for a long period of time to that to happen, but that is just what people collecting rain water ro drink it would do.

thank you all for your input, everyone is saying the same thing I read everywhere online, nobody actually has real life knowledge. It's ok though, I'll just add one or two filter and maybe gather some water at several points during the year and make it analyze even.
I don't live in a polluted area (+100km to the nearest international airport, 15km from a medium city), but my roof is probably the biggest threat as it is made of bitumen tiles (and bird shit).

Lived in the tropics for 10+ years. Everyone had rainwater supply from their roof - groundwater no good due to volcanic area.
It was fine. Everyone was fine. I'd wager they're still fine.

We just finished setting up a filtration system. We’ve got a couple of seasonal springs (so basically rainwater)
>50micron spin down filter
>calcite tank (raises pH from ~5.4 to ~7)
>30 micron filter
>20micron
>10 micron
>1 micron
>uv lamps (disinfects; prior testing showed coliform and E. coli)
From there it goes into a 500g holding tank where we add a half cup of bleach before draining into our main tanks to be used in the house.

If you’re just doing straight up rain harvesting you’d likely just want a calcite tank or something to handle the acidity (5.4 is pretty normal for rain, 7 is neutral) along with bleach to disinfect. Optional: carbon filter to reduce chlorine odor and taste.

That's a myth. Water is not a significant source of any dietary minerals and, no, osmosis is not going to cause minerals in your body to get sucked out into whatever amount of distilled water you drink, your body is more than capable of maintaining homeostasis against an osmotic gradient.

In a normal living situation, water collection does not have this issue.

Yeah I dunno man. The shit that gets put on the internet blows my mind. But then people read it, believe it, and act on it... I can't even come up with an appropriate word.
