The argument I always see from coping eastoids is prominence. They have “real mountains” because they have steep hiking trails or something. Meanwhile I can go skiing in May and have world class rock climbing minutes from my house.

I don't think you can derive ratings by state unless you take the median rating of each each state by each anon. Just picking the top three best states won't give you enough ratings. If you made a template that anons can post and then you take the median rating it'll remove outliers on the high and low of each state.

Elevation means elevation above sea level, not how many feet from the base. Out west even the plains are well above sea level compared to the East.

New Hampshire has more classic hiking routes like the Presidential Traverse, Pemi Loop, Huntington Ravine, King Ravine and Franconia Ridge. 48 of the NE 111 peaks are in New Hampshire and only 5 are in Vermont. That's not taking anything away from Vermont. Someone who's into skiing and mountain biking might pick Vermont and that's fine. All 3 states in northern New England are elite as is New York.

The trails are much better maintained in the Whites than in the Adirondacks. If you can handle trails in the ADK, you should be good in the Whites and the rest of New England. You also get more above treeline mileage in the Whites.

Biggest downside to the Whites is that it doesn't feel as remote as the Dacks or Maine. The canoeing and kayaking also doesn't compare.

Katahdin is 4000 feet higher than its base
The western edge of Denver is around 6000 feet
Drop Katahdin at the edge of the Rockies and its summit elevation would be at least 10k
The Front Range foothills are lower than that

Se my list 4k does not make the list. in fact only two east costers make the list, and the are 129 Mount Marcy and 16 Clingmans Dome, which are about as high as Santiago Peak in Orange County, California.

San Jacinto is a top 20 prominence at 8,339 ft, which is high by thousands of feet over any east could foot hill. Do you have any ideal of how many peaks are over 10k in the west though? There are over 300 peak higher then 11k.

From the front of my house I can see Mount Jefferson which is about 30 or 40 miles away as the crow fly. I can also see North and south sister. By car, I can get to Whispering Pine Horse Camp in about an hour. All three of those peak are over 10k.
