I am going to Yellowstone National Park this October.
never been there, I have a week dedicated to it. I'll most likely be taking i90 into Wyoming
Where to go, what to see?
I wont be hunting or fishing
I like to hike, offroad, drive around aimlessly, swim, enjoy hot springs, chill by the campfire.
Whats weather like in mid October? any roads closed by this point?

If possible, and if open (closes 10/15), I would suggest taking the beartooth pass which means going through Bilings to get to hwy 212. very weather dep obv. If not the Chief Joseph pass is also cooll- aout half waay between red lodge and cody.

that depends on you- if you want to see critters either lamar or hayden valleys, geysers- geyser basin, big mts- the biggest are all on the edge or outside the park. might as well swing down to check out the Tetons

Lots of FS roads outside the park to explore but again not gonna happen if its snowing. A few commercial hot springs run outside the park but the only sanctioned "wild" spring in the park was washed out by the floods a couple of years ago

October should have decent options for camping in the park as campgrounds wont be full and the backcountry even less so....easy to hike a mile or 2 up a trail head and have the place to yourself. Even if the full route into Yellowstone isn't open (there was some massive flooding and they're rebuilding from years ago), go to Beartooth Pass anyway and then come back out. You'll be able to go as far as ... I forget the name of the town but it's like a motorcycle town or something. Then just turn around come back out. Absolutely worth it and probably better than anything in Yellowstone.

Beartooth is the best but in the case of it being closed Chief Joseph Scenic Byway/Sunlight basin road is a nice drive and leads to the same place but its out of Cody, WY

You got a good set of binos or a spotting scope? Lamar is the best place to spot the wolves. Although there's a good chance of checking out bison/elk in most the valleys. Old faithful is impressive but very crowded, I like the area around Mammoth springs in the North side of the park. All the geothermal areas are worth exploring. Lone Star geysers easy to get to, just a short hike. Just kinda wander and look around. My favorite place is just hitting the lake

people dont just randomly vanish without it being reported by loved ones. People dont get attacked by bears and go to the hosptial for treament without it getting reported. There are only ~2000 griz in the lower 48. when they have dangerous encounters with humans its well known.

I'll add that Yellowstone is best for the tourist sights and I don't know if October has less crowds. I went once in the summer and it was terrible, like sit in traffic for hours terrible. A god trip would be like Wind River range, Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier. Bring a good camera.

Highly recommended, magnitudes better than Old Faithful, at worst you'll have to wait like 3 hours for it, bring a book, it's worth it. The other predictable geysers in the Old Faithful area are great too, Old Faithful is probably the worst one taking into account the massive crowds and how far the viewing area is from it. lots of nice little geysers and springs along the boardwalks also.
>Great Fountain Geyser
Fairly predictable but the last couple times I've been the road to it has been closed to vehicles and no one was predicting it, not the park itself nor even the geyser nerds on geysertimes dot org. But if you can catch it I recommend it, second favorite geyser I've seen after Grand.
>Imperial Geyser
This one takes an actual hike to get to, but a fairly easy trail. Takes you past the Grand Prismatic overlook and Fairy Falls and gets very busy, I suggest getting an early start. Not busy past Fairy Falls for whatever reason, you'll probably want bear spray for reassurance here.

Norris Geyser Basin and Mammoth Springs are cool. For wildlife Lamar Valley is best for a good chance to see bears and wolves, don't forget binoculars. Bison and elk are common throughout the park. Canyon area is gorgeous, check out the brink of the lower falls and do the trail past artists point for sure. Tons of other nice roadside stops at waterfalls and geothermal features throughout the park.

If you want to do actual /out/ type stuff the Bechler area is my favorite. Pretty remote place with tons of great waterfalls, most require either backpacking reservations or very long day hikes, generally easy terrain besides some fairly simple stream crossings. There are some remote soakable springs in the area also. For mountain hikes and views surrounding areas like the Tetons or Wind River are better.

October is a great time to go for fewer crowds though there's the chance for frigid temps and big snowstorms.

Am doing Glacier/Yellowstone plus a few MT state parks in late Sept and am splitting motels and campsites in Yellowstone due to limited availability. Advice I got was to move around to lessen time in traffic. First night sleep in Gardiner motel by the north entrance, then Slough Creek by Lamar Valley, Lewis Lake, then last night sleep in a west entrance motel. After that it's on to Tetons

You might want to consider staying in Cooke city via the beartooth pass on the way to slough creek. its closer, more remote and beartooh hwy rules.
