I've never worn caligaes, but I've hiked and rucked in Feiyues (chinese martial arts shoes) before, when I was in the tropics and my regular boots were just to damn hot. Those are similar in shape to the bottom part of caligae except for not having holes and have soles that are about as thick and stiff as leather. They were pretty comfy, even at 20kg+ loads in my backpack.
