Post all things about, of, or relating to Black Bears.

I'm getting up early tomorrow and going deep off grid for some hiking, it comforts me and clears my mind, and as of late I could use a bit of that. Perhaps I will spot a black bear, I will report back with pics if I do.

I have hiked hundreds of km in bear country and have never seen one before. They are very good at avoiding people.

I saw another one, or maybe that same one, on the road again as I was driving the very next day. It was in the middle of the road this time, walking along the center line, as I approached it. It looked behind itself, saw me, and slowly started moving over to the right while continuing to walk forward in order to let me pass. It was strangely nonchalant and courteous behavior for a bear.

Maybe they're like grouse. They're used to cars and don't perceive them as a threat.

where I live bears were allegedly extirpated long ago. Rumors started circulating around 2015 that black bears were being sighted and those rumors were confirmed though trail cams. We know there are black bears in the San Jose mountain range but to cross into the Santa Monica mountains requires them to cover a lot of distance and many people questioned the authenticity of the trail cam photos. Last year I was in an old growth forest I frequent. it's an old wooden area with dense leaf fall. I was in a usual spot where I had recently found an old animal skeleton. I usually take the dog with me but this time I was alone(thankfully)

fast forward until last week and s friend of mine tells me he saw a black bear on his usual hiking trail.
So they're population is definitely growing steadily in urban Southern California
