>>2742596I don’t really think that it’s criminals down there (unless he just didn’t fit in, they’re racist as fuck and the overwhelming majority of hate crimes are anti-white), just terrain (volcanic rock will crumble without warning, and flash floods / mudslides are no joke out there) and wildlife (known or unknown, ).
Last time I went there it was 1/3 old hippies and 1/3 Vietnam vets in the woods, mixed in with a few young couples, foreigners, some /out/ist types, plus the occasional schizo or two.
I would say maybe 2 people out of 50 gave me a slight pause upon meeting them, one later let us borrow his cast iron pan to make jungle pizza with fresh wild tomatoes and dehydrated nacho cheese powder, so my instincts were wrong about him and that leaves a possible 1 weirdo / 50 jungle dwellers.
I showed up to camp with 5-7 days worth of food and between hippie pot-luck culture and foraging I spent 3-4 weeks back there, never hungry, and left some stuff that I didn’t even use.
They love tobacco back there so if you showed up with a pouch of American Spirit to trade they’d probably feed you for a week (way lighter than 1 week of food, but these vets have their own logistics and boats that bring them stuff donated from churches and food pantries on other parts of the islands).
Aside from that there is a shit ton of foraging, both in town and in the forests, and almost any restaurant will give you a free bowl of rice if you don’t look like a meth head and ask kindly.
