What does /out/ think about these "plus-sized" women who wobbled up Mount Kilimanjaro? Does anybody believe that they maintained a >1 mph pace for over 40 hours on their 45-mile uphill trek?

just long
and needs time if you are sensitive to altitude

no technical difficulty
not even a particularly "dangerous" trail in terms of slip danger
still needs a decent fitness level, especially summit day

the altitude is what gets you if you do not acclimate

For serious hikers, Kili sounds like an exercise in frustration more than anything.
Imagine being a superhiker like Danny from Mediocre Amateur and being forced to go at a slow pace with guides and porters because it's required by law. And then be subjected to that cringey tip dance at the end.
Still a cool experience with all the climate zones you pass through and the wildlife nearby, but christ

you can skip most of the bullshit and just get one guide (required by law) and 2 porter for the guide (and carry your stuff by yourself)

Kilimanjaro is notoriously known for altitude sickness as you ascent pretty quickly
and there are barely any side tours you can do to acclimatize (like you'd typically do in the Himalaya, Karakoram or Andes)
and of course a lot inexperienced "hikers"

but the nature is stunning
honestly even though it's a tourist trap I'd still recommend it
just view it more like a safari / scenic walk and not mountaineering

They don't look much fatter then my wife. She'd probably summit faster then 90% of /out/.

Or put it another way - being fat isn't really the problem, it's how you became fat that's a problem. My wife is physically active, works out and eats healthy. She just eats way to much.

Yep. I know a guy took his daughter up there when she was 9 or 10. (Might acually have had her 10th b'day on the summit now I think about it)
I haven't been there, but he said it's just a long gradual uphill. She just described it as a hill with a really big view.
