>>2741241I've lived most of my life in the Upper Midwest, so here's my guide to that part of the country.
>ActivitiesPlenty of more flat-land hiking, lots of forests and grasslands to enjoy. Also keep in mind the Great Lakes and Mississsippi watersheds have some of the best lake and river systems in the US. If you like fishing, kayaking, swimming, or canoeing, these are great places for you to enjoy. We don't have mountains here, so the best you'll get would be the Canadian Shield or the Driftless Area for vertical hiking.
>DangersDo you like feeding the mosquitos and ticks? If not bring plenty of deet, vanilla, and citronella. Mosquitos will fuck off from deet, but horse flies will still attack you; vanilla helps a little. As always when going /out/ have a charged phone and tell someone where you'll be.
>Land UseWhat we lack in federal lands here we make up for in state parks and state forests; so when picking a place look for those. In Minnesota, state forests allow dispersed camping free of charge*, however that doesn't apply to state parks. In most states, you will be required to have either a day or annual pass on your car if you don't want forest jannies to ticket your vehicle, and they WILL ticket your vehicle. Foraging for wild edibles will depend on what type of land you're using; I know state parks only allow fruiting bodies in MN, and I think WI doesn't allow you to take them from state parks, but state forests in both are usually free game. Fishing is allowed in both, hunting only in forest lands or designated wildlife management areas (WMAs).
