Hey /out/ I have a dilemma.
I'm thinking of taking some buddies to the desert in southern cali for a weekend together but I need help knowing how to prepare and what to pack. I've been a few times but I was too young to remember the important details.

I have a Ford Excursion with plenty of room and 4wd if that helps at all. I've been saving for months and I have about two grand to spend for this. I want to be as prepared as possible please help me /out/. I need to keep these people as safe as possible during this trip, all the responsibility falls on me.

How do I into desert camping?

Did you bring a shovel/carpets/wood/sandladders?

Do you have a toolbox? Are you mechanically inclined? Throw that shit in the back. If not, think very seriously before heading off road- again, lots of people get fucked by using their car to get them farther away from home than they can get back without it.

Either way, I think you probably get the point....

Just don't OP, if you have to ask advice on this level on 4chan you are going to die out there.

Especially when combined with "Ford excursion with plenty of room and 4wd". Your safari options with that beast are limited strictly to food courts of local malls.

Excusion is huge and probably will suck up tons of gas. Bring extra gas (5-10gal). You're going into the desert so expect the off chance you might get stuck there. Bring 2-3 weeks worth of water just in case even though you will only plan to be out there for the week. You'll expect to drink at least 1 gallon a day. Not to mention washing your hands/face or boiling water. I say at least 15 gallons of water.

Obviously make sure your car is in tip top shape in terms of oil, antifreeze and other fluids. Make sure people know how long you will be out there and draw a small map of where you plan to be. If you get stuck they will probably search the area and the trails along the way. At least it will narrow down the place instead of an entire desert.

Bring a huge ice chest filled with ice (can probably use this as extra emergency water too). It will probably melt in one or two days but that should keep some food fresh. Bring things that will last a long time like jerky/trail mix/pb&j.

That canopy like in the picture is a great idea for shade during the day, it will be scorching hot. I'll say water and gas is the most important.

I don't think bringing paper plates to eat on is a good idea, no where to throw your trash away and it will smell if you leave it in the car. Wouldn't suggest burning it either. How will you wash your plates? More water and soap.

This time of year it's important to bring layers of warm clothing, topped by a solid windbreaker, preferably waterproof. It's the desert, but you're going to be sucking if you get caught in a flash flood.

This also means bringing appropriate shelter and sleeping system; tent with rain fly, possibly multicomponent sleeping bag, throw in an extra blanket for the feet.

Expect high winds, expect fast moving sand, bring a shemagh, or anything to keep it out of your mouth, bring goggles, or alternatively just get in your vehicle or shelter till it blows over.

Check BLM to figure out if you can legally shoot in the area, if you can, bring a gun, preferably a shotgun. There will be snakes, there will be coyotes, there will even be kangaroo rats taking your shit. I stated in another post, and it is absolutely true, coyotes WILL rob you if you let them, keep your shit by you if you notice them in the area, chances are they've noticed you. I can't speak for all areas, but in mine, they don't fear people anymore, too many assholes keep feeding them.

If you burn, take sunscreen, take a form of shade, take that form of shade down when it gets too windy. I've seen empty tents that weren't properly secured get thrown in the winds, which common sense should tell you, properly secure your shit.

Run over what allergies your friends have, specifically bee allergies. We have carpenter bees out here, and they are really REALLY attracted to any water. Other big insects are ants and spiders, brown recluses, etc etc. If you wake up with a bite, keep an eye on it, and if it seems worse than normal get out of there. Watch before you step, be especially attentive when traversing rocky terrain, snakes like to hide in rock crevices to stay warm while out of the sun. Don't walk around with an MP3 player on, and learn what a rattler sounds like.

And of course, what everyone else said, extra food, water, whatever.
