>>2741828I've lived in Alaska for about five years now, and the summertime mosquitoes are famously vicious. I grew up in Florida and thought it was bad there, but Alaska mosquitoes will swarm and bite you like a swarm of bees, especially in the interior. A couple of things I've learned about keeping them away:
1. DEET isn't that effective. I've tried spraying 99% DEET all over my clothes, pack, skin; it's never deterred mosquitoes up here. Use insect repellant, but don't go all-in on DEET expecting results.
2. Mosquito nets are cumbersome, uncomfortable, and invariably trap a bunch of mosquitoes inside with you.
3. Citronella candles are great if you're chilling in your backyard, but inconvenient when you're camping.
The only sure-fire mosquito repellant method I've found is covering myself in my own feces. When I prepare to hike in deep woods, I drop my pants and spray rancid, watery shit all over my hands which I then rub into my skin and hair. It keeps the mosquitoes off like a charm, and I've come to tolerate the foul stench.
Hope this helps!
