What the title says. I am based out of Stanislaus County, California and have booked an entire week off in August to go explore somewhere neat. I have experience solo hiking and hanging out in the boonies. I am planning on taking my civic, tent camping, and am open to the idea of picking up a small hand gun for self defense if necessary.

I'm looking for solitude, so I was thinking of somewhere in the desert, maybe in the Mojave or Death Valley. I have lived my entire life in a hot, dry environment, so sun protection, midday resting, an absurd amount of water, etc. are pretty normal. My main concern is just personal safety, so that's why I was contemplating bringing the gun. Animals and environmental factors are a non-concern. I figure the hottest part of the state during the hottest part of the year would give me some nice peace and quiet. Any suggestions?

FYI I'm young and in great shape, so I will have no issue with the physical aspects of the adventure.
