I bought a kayak today (Pelican on top of the pile). It was midday and flirting with triple digits so I'm taking it out on the river tomorrow morning. Any suggestion for a standard 1/4x20 camera mount I can slide into the rigging tracks?

Very narrow river with a gentle current and not much in the water. I live in NC, so if I were gonna go on the Cape Fear or Haw I'd take one, but it's just not a concern in water I can stand in

Pelican kayaks are great, I really love mine. I need to equip it with fishing rod holder and some rigging tracks and it will be perfect.

I love throwing lures for pike and fly fishing from my kayak, I also spend a week on the river every summer camping with my kayak, they will hold a lot of gear if packed properly.

I have a dilemma /out/
I am looking for a canoe to take my gf and dog out on the water with. I already have a kayak and I stick to calm small lakes, but she wants to go out on the water with me instead of just fishing from shore. I am looking for a used one so that I spend a fortune. I will also be taking some male friends out to fish occasionally.

Im looking at a pretty vintage 17 foot fiberglass (in extremely good condition) or a 17 foot grumman aluminum. They are both the same price. I dont have a trailer hitch, but I may be forced to install one for the canoe. I will not ask my gf to help me put the canoe on the roof of my vehicle because she is tiny and not particularly strong. Is it feasible to try to try to put either of these on the roof by myself?

kayak pros: generally faster, easier to wet reentry, built in "dryer" storage space, handles shitty seas better, can learn to roll and self rescue easier than soloing a canoe imo, usually lighter. kayak cons: mostly solo (altho tandem kayaks), can haul less gear, can't mount a motor as easy, easier to fish from. Really depends on what you want /out/ of it and how you plan to use it.

I've been on rivers in both and don't even consider a canoe anymore for my needs (mostly day trips). They're lighter, more maneuverable, FAR MORE comfortable to be in, and easier to transport. I can see why others might prefer a canoe though, especially for longer trips.

I have a 17ft grumman. not really that heavy, it's the length that makes it seem heavier. I think the standard is like 80lbs. there were lightweight models and heavier models but not as common. you can load it yourself if you get a good method worked out.

yes people do long distance, but you want the right kind of kayak for that. specifically a touring kayak. more efficient to paddle. I paddle like 4 hours every weekend on a normal kayak, who knows how many miles combined, often against wind and current. It's not really brutal, but definitely not efficient like if I was in a sleek touring kayak that cuts through the water easily. you can maintain nearly double the top speed with half the effort in a touring kayak.

I got the grumman. I am already really happy with it. I did a test run in my pond and im trying to get my dog used to it now.
Its from 1965 and its in damn nice shape. No dents or bends and it just has a few little scratches on the bottom from use. I figure that with care this will last past 2065

cool. some hacks for comfort and sound deadening are to add some marine eva foam like seadek to the spots under your feat on the floor, and to neatly wrap some pool noodles around the thwarts. that also adds some floatation. the canoes last a long time, the only real thing to try to avoid is hitting shark rocks really hard or having tree limbs fall on it during storms. I have one from the 80s that is pretty beat up but doesn't leak a drop.

You're actually safer on alloy/aluminum boats in general in lightning as they conduct directly into the water while on fiberglass electricity may get routed around briefly.

On a canoe though, there's not going to be any difference. It's not more likely to be hit and the thin material makes a negligible difference for lightning conduction.
