what's an effective insect repellent that won't give me cancer? should I avoid DEET?

I have personally used both 60% DEET spray, and picaridin lotion.
Neither work. shit, i saw a mosquito land into a drop of picaridin lotion, and live.
shit does nothing against bugs. i dont know what else i can use

deet wont give you cancer it is quite safe
picaridin is a good alternative that is also highly effective and even safer
treating clothing with permetherin helps but you will probably still need to treat exposed skin
avoid plant based all natural citronella / plant oil type stuff it does not work

I think it's more about your blood type and diet than spraying the right repellent to avoid squiters. When I do put it on, I like using those with lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, and other essential oils. Calamine is nice to put on bites.

It's not blood type it's the way you smell to skeeters.
I use an "all natural" oil blend spray and it does work. "Murphys" i think. Backpacked through the coastal redwoods last week and I was getting swarmed when deep in the wet part of the forrest but only had three bites after three days. I apply about 3 times a day since it's not as effective as deet. Not sure if we have different kinds of mosquitos out here on the best coast but the natural stuff works just fine for what we have. Deet is a solvent and can fuck up your gear if you get enough on it. Reacts with sunscreen and other stuff too.

Alaskan here, idk wtf you're talking about, I use pidardin lotion and mosquitos just refuse to land on my exposed arms and legs. I go for walks through clouds of mosquitos more dense than any of you have ever seen and don't get any bites.

Get the 100% stuff. It does not smell like the lower percents and does an even better job of melting plastics. That being said any percent will work just fine but you get more bang for your buck and for the weight out of the 100%. Bonus points for the gell kind that comes in a metal tub.
