Nylon is stronger and more abrasion resistant for the same weight, but is much stretchier, less waterproof, and more prone to UV damage than polyester.
These fabrics are designated by weight per square yard, typically ranging from 1.1oz to 1.9oz. Obviously there are lighter and heavier options; that’s just the most common range.
Denier is another specification you’ll run into. It’s determined by the actual diameter of the yarns in the fabric, which is responsible for the fabrics weight. Because some fabrics aren’t waterproof, they’ll be slightly lighter but have the same denier as comparable waterproof fabric. Also, you might see fabric listed as 20D x 20D, indicating that the thread sizes use vertically and horizontally are the same.
