Not exactly. There's no unclaimed land that you can just claim by dropping a few seeds anymore.

There are similar strategies though.
For example, in countries with German law (as opposed to the roman law burgistan and most of western Europe have), if you grow on (or otherwise use) a plot of land for a certain period of time (10-30 years, depending on country), as long as the owner entered in the state records is dead or lost (as in, lost at sea) you can make it legally your property. I've got this going on with five plots which legally belong to people who've been dead for decades already (one even has a guy who died in the battle of stalingrad as the legal owner...). Took pictures when I first started planting there, and in 15 years, I'll be able to become the legal owner.
Three of those plots are boring farmland of little value other than being right next to plots I inherited the normal way, but the two remaining plots have about 1.5 million € in value. Those, I'll sel the moment I own them.
