Driving from California to Texas and trying to hit as many national parks as I can on the way.

What do you guys think of my route? Any changes or recommendations? I'm leaving in a few days and have never backpacked in dry areas overnight.

when you hit white sands instead of going down to el paso go up into the mountains to the east. right now theres wild fires in the northern national forest where the 11k peak is, but i think the southern forest, lincoln nf, is untouched by them. it's like a 9k high uplift its kinda cool to dick around in for a day or two. and then head to carlsbad through artesia and guadalupe after that. guadalupe is the southern most tip of that uplift.

Yeah nothing I can do about that. Forecast says it will be in the low 90's for Zion/GC so I'm not too worried.

Thanks for the heads up. I checked a week ago and the White Sands campgrounds are closed. Didn't realize the fires were ongoing.
