Bergamo is not bad, but it is far from the mountains and you'll need a car, if you are a tourist who comes from far away I don't recommend it.
If you want to enjoy the mountains in the best way podsibile I recommend the Dolomites area, and cities like Cortina D'Ampezzo or Bolzano are good places to start from.
If instead you want to do something easier and enjoy a city at the same time then I highly recommend Turin. From there there are countless trains that go to the west valleys and there are many interesting places reachable without a car (obviously do not expect high altitudes)
