The main issue is a lot of backpacking gear has to be checked; it’s against the rules to bring some items onto the plane.
Theoretically you could spend several hundred dollars and totally reequip yourself with brand new stuff, including boots that aren’t broken in. Most of it will be subpar crap you don’t want or doesn’t fit your exact criteria, and it will be very expensive (especially considering it’s being bought out of necessity).
