>>2758436It used to blow my mind how many people don't know how to swim. I thought it was just something everyone learned at one point, like riding a bicycle or changing a light bulb. But I'll meet people in their 30s or older that still don't know and don't plan on learning. Even people that go to the beach and ostensibly should know for safety's sake.
It's made me realize, though, that you just don't need to know. If you don't regularly get on the water or go to a place that has a pool, you really are just never going to be in a situation where you're immersed in water beyond bathing. I've always wondered if an adult falling into the water without knowing how to swim would just instinctively be able to keep their head above water for a while, though. It's not like the concept is complex, so I think it would come down to whether panicking and flailing would outweigh the minimal level of coordination necessary to assist one's natural buoyancy.
