compared to the appalachians, if youre looking for hills youve got it. the ozarks are geographically and culturally very similar to them. if you want a new experience and some less traveled paths then i would say the shorter hills might be worth the travel.

i mean idk what youre planning, but i would probably start by st genevieve in missouri, in the st francois mts, and then move southwest towards the boston mts in arkansas. i would just stay away from the lake and from branson, and from any other big population centers.
shannon county and texas county and that area might be a good place to look for some hidden gems too.

I like the current river a lot. It's in Missouri but still the Ozarks. The current river section of the Ozark Trail travels along it.

The one thing I think we have over the smokies are the large dolomite and limestone bluffs we have. I mean our bluffs are like 600 feet tall in some places along select rivers. Although the smokies definitely just have more altitude that is for sure.

there's 500 foot bluffs above the ohio river you can climb but you are supposed to have a permit (I don't think most people do it) that means showing up to a park office nearby or getting it mailed if you write them 14 days in advance (really)

kinda the same deal there's stupid ass saplings blocking part of the view
also there's a closed trail straight up and a longer trail switchbacking around to the top

for whatever reason there's not a whole lot of public land with a view above the ohio river between pittsburgh and cincinnati

I would recommend The Boston mountains. If you can, I would recommend canoeing or kayaking the wild and scenic riverways, especially the Buffalo. If you want to camp, there are a ton of options in the St. Francis and you can disperse camp anywhere. It's super cheap. I would also recommend going to alum cove, Whitaker point, and the Lost valley trail.

Have you done the upper part? Way prettier IMO but requires good rain. The Jacks is also nice. Either one ends with a stop at the Dairy Shack in Eminence though.

Alum Cove, Whitaker Point, Lost Valley, Glory Hole, Devils Canyon, and White Rock Rim are all good. You can also just jump almost anywhere along the Ozark Highlands Trail and have a good time.

This is one of my favorite parts of the OHT - 35.70464, -93.73648

I've been bushwhacking out that way hunting deer and turkey many a time. Hard to find any damn turkeys though.

That area is protected. Besides that tree in that photo is literally growing off a vertical bluff so I don't even know how it would get cut down. Not to mention the nearest parking lot from that overlook is 8 or 9 miles away.

The upper part of what? The Ozark Trail? Yeah I did the entire Courtois section if that is what you are asking. If you are referring to floating, I have never floated on the current although I would like to.

taum sauk aint in the national forest, also the boston mountains arent true mountains like the ouachitas and st francois mtns, they are a dissected plateau so most mountains are the same height (only the gorges and valleys change depth). that being said, although im a big fan of the whitaker point view the view from buffalo lookout shows farther over the horizon if that's what you are looking for

the view from buffalo lookout. wikipedia says this is the highest point in the ozarks but im pretty sure some retard read the topographical map wrong and confused the 100 foot fire tower for 100 feet of elevation. im pretty sure the highest mountain is actually turner ward knob which you'll need to bushwhack to get to the top of
