Anyone else here chew pine resin?

Found a good glob of it in my hiking pants so I've been at it for a couple days now. Brings me back to when I was on the mountains, since I'd chew it just about every day.

Also - I'm addicted to the newly sprouted needles come spring, though those I mostly eat from fir.

Come to think of it, I have a dangerous tendency to chew vegetation while walking...

Come spring time I can't get enough of fresh sap from pine. It has an weirdly fruity, sweet flavour unlike anything else, though I try to keep my coniferous intake at a reasonable level.

isn't a lot of pine sap and bark and needles poisonous?

i found when researching how to identify spruce (so i could finally indulge in the delicacy that is spruce gum) that it was imperative that i NOT chew the sap from a non-spruce because a lot of them are poison or irritants

In large amounts, most resins have undesirable effects. Generally speaking though, if it's positively identified as a pine, spruce, larch, or fir, then you shouldn't worry too much unless you're pregnant. True cedars that grow in the Meditarannean are known to be poisonous, however.

huh I guess I'll have to do some research. got lots of land and a good amount of pines on it, but idunno if any of them are spruce, and even if not poisonous, i don't want to be walking around chewing the wrong shit getting my mouth all nastified

The good news is that pines and spruces are really easy to identify when you know what to look for. It's mostly just counting the needles and looking at a few simple traits.

yeah I'm looking into that now! sadly from what i've already seen, spruce has little egg-like cones and short needles and the trees we have in these parts are long needles and furry. might have to steal some gum from the park or something

Don't forget to include information how to identify a larch at a considerable distance.

I assume you are both in the US with plenty of poisonous flora? Here there are like 10 actually poisonous plants - and everyone knows them. All other plans are used to make herbal tea for one ailment or another.

Correct me if I'm wrong, buy isn't it true that you have to process pine sao by boiling before you can chew it, but you can chew spruce gum straight off most varieties of spruce?
Where I live in Maine you can chew it right of the tree, but every kind I tried in Europe just crumbled in my mouth. It becomes chewable if you cook it over a candle in a spoonful of water, as you would heroin. Not kidding.

The pixelated edge of the cone was bothering me.

I was only planning to do an identification chart, but if there's enough demand for an edible parts guide I can do that too. It'll be a lot smaller than the identification guide if I can group similar trees together.

My field guide for Florida lists Sand pine, Slash pine, Longleaf pine, Pond pine, and Loblolly pine.

I have a very hard time identifying them. They all have needles in bundles of 2-3. Cone size and leaf length are the biggest difference, and even then it's a maximum six inch difference. I can't always find a cone.

The resin I've tried hasn't been chewy. It melts in the mouth very easily. I end up swallowing it or getting it stuck to my teeth within a few minutes.

yes. but if all its going to have for identification is the number of pine needles, then there should be a little note that says there are other common trees with similar number of needles.

unless im wrong about red and pitch pine. in which case dont mind me.

If you're selective about the pitch you take then it chews just like gum, though starting out you'll probably get some sticky bits.
