>>2759784while what u say is true, its a little reductive. eucalyptus has been a major part of the california landscape for almost 200 years, all up and down the state, from the bay area up north, down to LA county and san diego. our climate and terrain is fairly similar to where they originate from in Aus. they are so much a part of cali, that it is a common notion that "eucalyptus is what california smells like"
they were imported and planted in such abundance, they may as well be a naturalized citizen at this point. they are beautiful, majestic, provide shade and cooling from the mean cali sun, great for reducing traffic noise and are great windbreaks. and here in the city and suburbs, there is not much risk of the types of wildfires they have up north, just because there is too much concrete for the fire to spread rapidly.
my suburb is full of them, and so are the suburbs all around here. my neighbor has 6 amazing mature trees, i have 2 mature and just planted 6 saplings. it is magical, it feels like i'm living in a forest instead of the big, dirty, smelly city that surrounds.
so, as a dendrologist, how do u suggest i protect them from these nasty little beetles? or is your knowledge just academic/theoretical? do i have to ask an arborist?
