The Surly Ogre is a true adventurer bike. So far I have taken it on two solo bike camping trips and it excels on the gnarliest gravel roads fully loaded.
Her name is Aria and her fursona is a dragon / velociraptor hybrid.

Very cool bike bro. My lht has been across the span of the entire United States and I couldn't be happier with it, though I didn't do a whole lot of off road stuff of course. I'm hoping to do a stretch of the Lewis and Clark trail (thinking Missoula to Astoria) but at this point it's just a dream

I feel more people should give bikepacking a try.

I used to do 1-2 week trips on a tricked out and modded diamond back ascend from the early 90s.
over all the result was quite similar to the ogre.

back then I was way too broke for surly.

I'm moving to Scandinavia in November and in dead set on going for a couple of trips once the snow is gone.

You can go pretty far of road if you're a skilled rider.
For most that is not the point though. Staying on dirt roads and smaller paved roads you can see a lot of sights and cover 10x the ground that you can on foot.

you can't really go completely off-road but you can go anywhere that's even remotely a trail.
and a big plus side is that you can easily go 80km a day on those shitty trails.

Not really. Having to drag a bike with pannier bags on a rough singletrack trail is 3 times more work than just walking.

Unless by trail you mean wheenchair accessible.

not a big fan of classic touring setups but I used to tour a lot on a modernized 90s MTB and a gravel bike with pretty standard fair bikepacking setups.

I could and did bunny hop both bikes.

Unless you're riding up literal mountains, you should be able to maintain at least 15 km/h, that's 5 hours and change to do 80 km.
I average 18 km/h in mixed terrain with panniers and I'm by no means a strong rider.

you're free to think what you want, but somewhere in my cellar there's literally an analog photo of me doing a weird boosted jump down a stone ledge on my loaded touring bike in the Czech mountains.
we did that shit like 20 times because we wanted the photo to work and one actually came out pretty sick.

Nta but that does sound like a great way to break the wheels or frame. I assume you had 36 spoke wheels but were old xc frames really built that stong? I have a 98 rayleigh with racks for commuting and some touring and it flexes a lot.

Bunnyhoping with loaded panniers is something i wouldn't even try but even if you could do it wasn't it kinda ass to ride singletrack on?

I always packed pretty light.
on the MTB I usually had a pizza rack in the front with 2 smallish panniers and a tent and sleeping stuff on the platform plus a top tube bag + a 20l bikepacking saddlebag.

I honestly loved how the bike handled when loaded.
I don't want to reveal my full autism but I really liked my setup and how it affected handling.

I was running some nope fun works enduro wheels, I think 32 spokes, that I got for something like 50e off ebay with back then "huge" 2.2 xc tires.

the wheel set seems to be bulletproof since its still going strong. I gifted the bike on to my brother in law eventually.
