All Subarus except for manuals have a wet clutch between the front and rear axles and can be outright locked up by adding a switch or if the center diff solenoid fails open. It's not all that different from 4x4 and the janny who wrote this letter is a seething wrenchlet. He'd have more of a point if he specified locking differentials but since he just said 4x4 he's merely a retard

Unless you have locking diffs, which very few vehicles have from the factory 4wd is also functionally 2wd depending on conditions.

There are more variables than just awd = bad a truck with bald tires and zero weight on the rear axle isn't exactly going to do very well in bad conditions either.

I should have said all modern Subarus since older auto transmissions and the STI could have different systems and I think there was one really old 5MT that had an open center diff instead of a viscous center diff. All Crosstreks are going to be either MPT or have the center VLSD

Subaru also does have brake vectoring stuff to make the open front and rear diffs not do one wheel peels on loose surfaces so the forest janny is just being a petty tyrant

I believe some let you lock the diff at low speeds I think the Kia Telluride off-road edition has this and the Nissan Rogue at least used to offer this, some of them do.
There are NO SUVs with a locking rear diff except the Jeep Grand Cherokee I think. There are trucks, but not SUVs, unless you get up to like luxury models and then I believe the Lexusized versions of the 4runner have that. But its not on cars below 50k

Clearance on a crosstrek is .6" higher than a jeep patriot. I would never buy one because they're aenemic and you should just get an outback at that point but the crosstrek does have 8.7" of ground clearance. The top tier model has 9.3". For reference a tacoma 4x4 has 9.4" and an f150 4x4 has 9.4"
