When I was a kid, a train crossing over the Alabama River derailed between Montgomery and Prattville. Locals reported that catfish in the river were eating the cotton that was being transported on the train that got dumped into the river. Since I was a kid, I never verified this myself but wonder if catfish really would eat cotton and if so, would they actually digest it and gain body mass from it or would it expand inside of them, causing them to become bloated and probably die?

It is well known that catfish will eat cotton seed but I always heard of cotton seed meal not whole cotton seeds though. So idk if it had already been ginned or what- I've honestly never heard of cotton being transported TO a gin on a train but I guess it's possible. Anyways, catfish would eat just about anything.

I was a kid so it's possible that I misunderstood what I heard. There's a pulp mill nearby so maybe it was something going to or coming out of the mill.
As an aside, in addition to being a cotton growing area, it once was the top producer of cotton gins in the world. But that was like a century before the trail fell off the river bridge.

Cotton is essentially just pure cellulose. No animal can digest it. There are a few that have some sort of mutualist microorganism in their gut that can digest it and then share the sugars that result, but they all eat things like wood as the majority of their diet. So yeah, if a catfish is eating cotton its either shitting it right out or dying.

It's just gonna cough it up or shit it out. It's going to be compressed and waterlogged, anyway. Birds eat rocks, and they don't die from it. Fish and frogs/toads are used to just inhaling anything that might be prey that they can possibly fit in their mouths.

Catfish is very prone to tasting like what it eats. All animals are to a degree but it's quite pronounced in catfish. Funny thing is that farmed catfish is raised to have almost no flavor of its own. Much like tofu, it's meant to be a flavor sponge for whatever sauce you marinade it in.
