Use the guide book routes as a foundation then explore around them and between them with the topo maps. Tourist traps tend to be at access points, so knowing where they are is handy. They also tend to be beautiful places. So you can take in the popular spots at the start of your hike and then get to more remote areas that you have researched in the guide books and highlighted on your topo maps as places of interest.
This is all good stuff to learn to do as route planning requires interest, research, and curiosity.
