There are various different programs in the US that fall under the unofficial umbrella term “welfare.” Nearly all go through the EBT (Electroinc Benefits Transfer) system, which is a government run account system with a debit card (after called an EBT card). The systems are federally and state funded, so the amount someone gets will depend on the state they live in.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrional Assistance Program, aka “food stamps”) is probably the most common. The money can only be used for food. WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is an addendum to SNAP, and is for WIC qualified items (food but also child needs, such as diapers). TANF is Temporary Assistance for Needy Families; cash for the poor, but you have to have children.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is the one that can be abused. You have to be disabled to qualify, but it’s cash payments that can be used for anything. Unlike the various other programs (I just listed the big ones), SSI isn’t temporary. As long as you’re disabled, you qualify.
