What is it about /out/ that attracts more gearfags than other hobbies?

With such a low barrier to entry you would think /out/ should filter gearfags

Every hobby is just 90% gear consumerism. People get more joy buying products and discussing their “hobby” online than they do actually doing the hobby and that goes double for all the “outdoorsmen” on here

When I got into bowhunting I bought the most expensive bow at my local sporting goods store because all they had in left handed bows were the cheapest and most expensive models. The cheap model was trash and was borderline too weak to hunt ethically.
"Buy once cry once" is a valid philosophy if you have the money. I started with whitetails, but I got a bear tag this year. My fancy bow is powerful enough to take a bear, but the cheap one wouldn't have been, and I would've had to upgrade anyway.

At least the beginning with nice gear probably spent time researching what the good stuff it, instead of just waddling down to the local Walmart and picking random crap off the shelf.

I used to shop at Carhartt for work clothes but then it became fashionable for high school girls to wear and the brand leaned into the fashion aspect and raised prices, not that it was cheap to begin with

This, i havent bought any /out/ gear since covid since everything doubled in price because of newfags

Honestly, I used to spend at least four or five hours a week here on /out/ browsing and posting shit I didn't know about. Next, I gear queered a little, but started cheap instead of going whole hog on most things. Once you've spent a couple hundred dollars on shit, you really make an active point to justify owning it (otherwise you craigslist that shit out of your closet). After having a bunch of gear, I actually picked up a hobby that was actually /out/ for effectively every season and now I only come here maybe two or three times a month to check the catalog; I've borderline hit normalfag status.
Anyway tl;dr is that gear queering makes you actively fight buyer's remorse until you start to enjoy the hobbies you have access to.

I can't afford all the top stuff. I shelled out on shelter and sleeping equipment. A shelter that doesn't leak in rain and a good sleep is invaluable. The rest doesn't bother me. I use a £30 amazon rucksack.

The expensive stuff hasn’t increased as a % in price nearly as much as cheaper stuff.
The amount of new people who know nothing, yet buy top of the line gear, is very small compared to new people who just go buy crap from their local store.
Most top of the line gear isn’t even sold in stores, you have to actively seek it out, which does a fair bit of self-selecting against people who know nothing.

As long as they aren’t like piano room anon, and actually use their gear, it’s better that they are interested enough to buy once cry once, instead of starting with chink slop that gets thrown away later.
At least with nice outdoor gear you can sell it used and someone will want it.

Its really kinda hard to spend serious money on hiking gear. I could probably upgrade all my gear for 3k.

Meanwhile I can go into a gun or bike store and spend 5-10k easy and still only scratch the surface.
