You can discover sources of fresh water by watching birds flying in straight lines back and forward.
Usually birds will nest away from water (unless they are aquatic) but will fly to and back in the morning and in the evening. It varies on the types you get in your area.
To learn this skill you need a week and patience; find a fresh water source and stake it out all day. Note what birds come at what time. Next day stake 100m away from the water, note birds and what time.
Next say stake 200m. Continue this pattern for a week until you are close to 1km away, you will now be noticing the times, bird types, flight behaviour and many other clues that will tell you where water is and perhaps what else is going on around you (predators, bird meets, weather etc).
I hope this has been helpful.
