ive got a guy cotten anorak that is surprisingly not oppresively garbage-bag-ish despite being pvc coated so its not "breathable" at all. its quite comfy for hiking and of course when out on the water in a boat or whatever

Use case needed. I've basically got three jackets.
One is no nonsense water proof. Not breathable in any way. It's tough and durable. It's over sized so I can get layers on underneath it. It's mostly used for more static situations in heavy rain. It's basically my work jacket.
The next is a three layer goretex with big pit zips. This is for activities in bad weather. Mostly hiking in areas where there is a good chance it'll rain all day. It's decently water proof, breathes well enough, but can be vented with the zips.
The last one is a really light jacket. It's good for running or hiking in drier places where the rain mostly comes in short bursts.

As a commercial fisherman, I wear Gage or Grundens jackets. I do like the ultra light Red Ledge jackets because I hate sweating. Lfs is commercial fishing retailer out of Seattle and Alaska. You dont need to spend that much. You can get a good coat for under 100$ that's good enough for the Bering Sea and you won't even be wearing it all day everyday beating it to shit.

One of those australian or british oilcloth jackets. I've had a few as a kid, and if you reoil them once a year, they stay waterproof. Stopped usingthem for a few years because I was using a poncho, and now I'm using a longridercoat (you'll find most suppliers under that exact name) for a year. Makes you look like a mixture between Doc Holiday and Van Helsing, but keeps you dry.

Go do some hard work in wet weather, once in breathable materail, once in PVC and tell me where you stand.
You get damp in one, soaked in the other before it rains.

I'm sceptical of most marketing claims around technical materials, especially waterproof, breathable jackets. However, like >>2777885 said higher out put activities in my gortex jacket Vs my non-breathable jacket have very different results. Venting is important like your say. I'm tired of how all the light weight jackets have removed their pit zips. Non of them have the two way zipper either. My omm jacket has a popper at the base of the neck so you can have it unzipped but still fastened enough to provide decent protection, it's a great feature.

I think ponchos are a way better concept than rain jackets.

The only thing they really lack is some well thought out tie down points to make them work better in wind.
We just need one motherfucker to step up and make a proper one and the rain jacket market is done for.

Grundens are the type of jacket that aren't breathable at all but rainproof, I wear a wool t shirt or tech polyester material t shirt under mine because I still sweat. I have the Neptune jacket and pants and it was about $180 for both when I got them on sale.

my 3 most used rain jackets are frog toggs, arcteryx semi breaths and a yard size 55 gallon trash bag. I always carry 2 as emergency gear even on single day short 20 milers. disposable ponchos are meh and they're 5 dollars each and inferior quality to 50 cent trash bag. pretty cringe.

Membranes work well but will last for about a decade, are expensive, vulnerable to fire and less breathable.

Goretex Shake Dry. It is the BEST breathable membrane technology, and the outer fabric doesn't absorb water. The company themselves make the jackets under their GOREWEAR line in your price range.

Unless it’s really cold out, my go to is an OR softshell. It’s not waterproof but it’s resistant enough and my body heat dries it almost as fast as it gets damp. Makes no sense to wear something completely waterproof if I’m dripping with sweat underneath. If it’s real cold, a Rab hardshell, some non goretex waterproof/breathable material. OR sombrero alway, great with the rain. Never been a fan of pack covers. Always line my pack first with a heavy can liner, then keep wet things separate inside the pack.

No, but its ultralight technical gear that is not for bushwacking.

Like any other two layer rain jacket the membrane can de-laminate over time but it usually takes years.

There is no such thing as a material that will keep you dry in rain without trapping your own moisture expenditure. It's physically impossible.

You want a poncho since the best solution is to have the ability for air to flow under the area collecting condensation from your body

I hike in a climate where rain or snow can come at any time and stay for days (at least outside of July and August). I just focus on staying warm, so I use warm thick gloves, wool socks and a cap. I do use a rain jacket but I always get soaked regardless. I recommend getting one with pit zips that isn't too heavy so you don't sauna yourself while hiking. It's pointless to try otherwise. If you live in a place where waiting out the rain is possible I'd get a poncho or frogg troggs or whatever. They aren't good for moving in from what I've heard, too floppy and loose by design.

It doesn't it's all fuckin marketing. Goretex works well enough in dry weather to vent heat and will work in the odd quick shower but in sustained rain it doesnt breathe whatsoever and you get soaked by sweat. Plus when it's raining the air is saturated anyway so vapour cant evaporate because it has nowhere to go.

Paramo directional clothing doesn't work.

Waxed jackets are cumbersome and a nuisance.

Ponchos really are the best option for heat management. And I like umbrellas too. My Senz mini umbrella has seen use in all conditions.

My last three multi day hikes have all involved at least one whole day of heavy, persistent rain. I wore a gortex jacket with a combo of light fleeces unber it. It kept me a decent temp and dry enough. It's certainly not what the marketing makes it out to be but your comments are hyperbol.

Nah, not oilskin, oilcloth. They're different things.
Oilskin is made from tightly-woven fabric covered in any random oil (usually parafin). Those oils stay liquid and have the problems you mentioned.
Oilcloth is made from coarse fabrics and with linseed oil or some southern american oil I always forget the name of. Those oils polymerize (same as linseed oil used in woodworking) and basically make the individual threads hydrophobic. Air still goes through, and on thin oilcloth, you can even see through, but water won't penetrate except with high pressures. And since the oil is no longer liquid, it doesn't stain, and the smell is neither strong nor bad.

My poncho weighs 350g and packs down to the same size as my OR goretex. My umbrella is 8 inches long when collapsed down, weighs 400g and will stand 60mph winds. I've used the umbrella in 50mph headwind & rain. It performed great and really helped me get to where I was headed safely.

If you’re spending that much then unless you live in a hot country I’d just buy a melton overcoat as they will keep whatever’s underneath about as dry and also keep you warm. If possible get it double faced. If not any other lining will be decent as long as it isn’t hydrocarbon slop.

It’s a worsted wool which means it will absorb as much rain as you’re likely to encounter and will dry out reasonably quickly. There’s a reason why armies used to make coats for their soldiers out of this.

I would suggest looking at some of the higher-end stuff on the secondhand market. Could probably get a really good Patagonia or North Face GoreTex PRO jacket for a decent price.
I got my Alpha SV secondhand and it's fantastic, but I still paid quite a bit for it because I'm a gearhead.
