Is it possible to live on the Appalachian Trail? Doing odd jobs in towns or working at hostels for room and board? I've heard that some people were able to do it for years on end. Any advice on equipment and how to get started would be great. Thanks.

Absolutely. Look into the Appalachian Mountain Club. The summer jobs at the high mountain huts are some of the most coveted /out/ jobs in the eastern states. If you want to live in a dorm with WiFi and easy access to town, you can work at one of their roadside lodges. My first seasonal job was at the Highland Center, saved $5000 over six months and kick-started my /trv/ lifestyle.

There are criminals who lived on it for years, primarily by stealing from locals as they traveled
It's a miserable way of life. Anywhere near towns and cities will be filled with other homeless bums like yourself. Beyond that requires a lot of prep to be able to live without resupply.

It's my backup plan if I'm ever having to live rough. Rob cars at trailheads for gear, rob bear boxes for food bags, bum around the thousand different trail towns till I find something useful. Plenty of trail magic to eat, hiker boxes full of food, day hikers giving you extra shit they don't need. It's a way to live. Cops can't fuck with you either, no law on da trail

Yes completely possible there are plenty of people that do this but it's more common in the western states. I do this. I just camp, hike, and work in random places. I don't understand how someone could live differently.
