You need to shell out to buy the thing, pay for maintenance, pay for government paperwork and pay for the petrol. If you get a shitbox, you can drop a lot of dough on repairs...that's quite a bit of paypigging, desu. In most of the world, you will be treated like shit for being a vagabond in a shitbox. It's getting tougher to find places where you can exist comfortably in peace without infringing and being infringed upon. My top recommendation for US vagabonds is National Forest dispersed camping.

Long cold nights, maybe three hours of pleasant weather a day if a storm isn't passing through. Very few job opportunities, nothing really to do if you aren't into socializing with boomers and bums.
Going down into Mexico for the winter is far superior as an adventure, but has its own issues. You, the vagabond gringo, has no right to be on most land in Mexico, as it is communally owned. Did I get away with it for fifty nights or so over the years? Sure. Did I have any guarantee of safety? LOL fuck no.
Picrel: 19000' Pico de Orizaba seen from the 15000' Sierra Negra. I vancamped near the trailhead for both mountains, hiked the Sierra Negra summit road. Had the whole national park to myself.
