Been debating moving to Elko, NV for a welding gig working on machinery for the gold mines. The Ruby Mountains, seclusion, and wages drew me to this area. Are the Rubies enough to satisfy the need to get /out/ for a few years? Any other places worth exploring in the area?

The Rubies are awesome and incredibly empty. Every thing north of Elko-Wells is basically high desert with sagebrush as far as the eye can see but with a ton of OVH opportunities and small streams with big trout if you know where to look. If you want seclusion Nevada is ideal. but it also has a funky vibe.

I just moved out to Ely, Nevada for government work. It's much more arid (all sage and pinion juniper) than the Elko area, but closer to Great Basin NP and cool shit in the Utah desert.
From what I've seen and heard, the Rubies are excellent peaks- and from what I've experienced in the few weeks I've been here, this whole region has absolutely amazing /out/ stuff.
Things like the Bonneville Salt flats for racing and the red rocks near Vegas are close enough for fun weekend trips.

There's not much to do in Nevada besides work, /out/ and gamble. At least the /out/ is good.

Thats kind of it. Outside of Vegas area and Reno area, its basically just mines, prisons, casinos, and brothels. You see a lot of 70yr old gals with huge blonde hairdos and cigs hanging out of their mouth at the slots in the local truck stop. People living in the middle of fucking no where and you wonder how.

The Ruby Crest trail is only about 30-40 miles. Beautiful up there, but you will feel the need to explore elsewhere after a while. Also check out the Jarbidge wilderness a couple hours north. Otherwise drive out to the Sierras or Utah

Because i mentioned moving to Elko. People primarily move there to work in the gold mine which is a dangerous, toxic job. Every conversation about Elko inevitably turns into averting you from working in the mine, so I clarified. I wasn’t aware there was a faction of retards with an intense hatred for an incredibly mundane, common profession.

My pops was a welder, and even as a kid growing up, I could tell over time the deterioration it caused. He did it up into his mid 60s, it’s not a job for soft men at all.
He’s in his 80s now and still squats and deadlifts, but I imagine he’d be in even better shape with a less demanding job.
