Shadows are surprisingly good at camoing anything, I had a similar incident, but in reverse with an elk. Was standing under a tree and a female elk was running half tilt at me. Didn't realize it didn't see me in the shade until it turned into big big close elk, and I started jumping up and down and clapping my hands together, it turned away and ran off.
Not as big as moose but still surprised the shit out of me lol.
