Any telescope users in /out/? Pic related

hey fellas Ausfag here. Not sure if this is right board or not so tell me if it isn't.
So I bought this Short Tube Catadioptric Equatorial Refelctor Telescope D114 F1000 for 150AUD
Came with SR4mm, H12.5mm, H20mm, 1.5x erecting eyepiece and 2xBarlow.
Is this a good buy?
I am reading through the manual and did all the alignment, but still fairly lost on how different pieces interact.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

You don't have to learn everything all at once. I'd just point it at something interesting, and try out the different eyepieces to see what they do. It's a new moon right now so maybe try Jupiter, or Saturn if you want to stay up late, it's always a thrill the first time you see the moons or the rings.

If you set the polar axis to 0 or 90 degrees like pic related you can use the equatorial mount as an alt-azimuth and sight with the finder scope, until you figure out how to align it properly. It's what I do when I'm just looking at the moon or planets.

Even binoculars help, & I can see Jupiter's moons and saturn's rings with my cheapish spotting scope.

i actually have a pair of nocs and they're terrific fun, but they're hard to see through because the eyepieces are too far apart for my eyes. plus holding them steady enough to really look at the moon etc is basically impossible.

Get a tripod. :3 But seriously, binoculars are good because you can pack them /out/ and have something fun to do on those long dark night in the middle of nowhere.

i am in fact planning a winter solo campout. i always bring my camera because i love night photography but the binocs would be great for skygazing. i have 5 different tripods for various things but my 'noculars don't mount to a tripod

My binocs have the mount but I don't have the adapter, so sometimes I just tie them to the tripod with the strap.

The stability makes a big difference in how much you can see.

The full size ones are better for stars than the pocket models because they let in more light, also more magnification isn't necessarily better. Mine are 7x50 Celestron. I'd avoid zoom binoculars because they aren't as sharp.

There are decent cheap beginners telescope out there! try with cheaper one first then gradually move to a better one may be? thats what I am doing anyway

I've kind of adopted the M.O. to not buy something twice. Granted, some hobbies are an ongoing investment because you wear stuff out or have to keep buying stuff, but I'd rather decide to get into it, research it, and then buy the ONE telescope I can live with. I find when I buy something cheaper or entry level (I even do this with software licenses) I get accustomed to it quickly and then realise I should have bought the better/pro version to begin with... and then I end up spending the money AGAIN.

so yeah... the list of things i'm saving for right now is a DSLR and a telescope and umma do it right the first time around

1. get a length of sturdy twine, about 2x your body length.
2. tie off so you have a big loop.
3. place binocs inside top of loop
4. place foot inside top of loop
5. twist or otherwise shorten loop so there is tension between foot and binocs

This should provide some steadiness without too much trouble.
I used to do this with a camera, where any screw that fit into the tripod fixture and a length of twine worked great.
