I don't go to places that are busy.

so yeah, I hike off trail all the time. Just not in places where it's not allowed. Because those places are too crowded.

as long as you have a GPS / map / compass it's very liberating. personally walking on trails makes me anxious

This. They're trying to avoid braided, shitty trails that are unmaintainable and an eyesore. Or puddles getting wider and wider because dudes don't want to get their $300 gore-tex sneakers wet. Or cutting switchbacks which eventually erodes an entire hillside and takes weeks for an underfunded trail crew to repair. No one's trying to stop you fucking off into the wilderness.

Where I go there’s been no one on the trails but I do have a constant lingering fear of running into someone on them since I don’t want to deal with people when I’m out in nature. I’ve walked with my dick out flopping before and it would be funny to do it again
