quilt vs sleeping bag

what do you think of quilts?
are they good in temperatures down to around 30F? the lighter weight and versatility seem appealing but idk about losing the hood.

I have a 20F quilt, body is warm down to those temperatures but yeah you need to figure out something for your head.
I manage with my thin wool beanie and neck gaiter for the occasional overnight but if I was doing it for a week I'd want to get something warmer.
They sell down hoods for this purpose for not that much money

Quilts are fine only during summer if you ask me. Its like sleeping in a regular bed with a blanket so its more comfortable. But when its cold you want to get straps that wrap it around your sleeping pad and then its just a sleeping bag with extra steps to gaining minimal weight savings. And then it feels like a sleeping in a coffin just like sleeping bag and you lose the biggest advantage that is freedom of movement. But your mileage may vary since i roll around a lot during night and would get nasty draughts with a quilt. And a lot of sleeping bags can be used like a quilt if you have a long zipper so you get the best of both worlds.

I have the IMSS patrol bag. They say it’s good for about 40F, but would I be alright if it’s 20F and I just wear clothes in it? I do have some extra space in the bag because the straps max out before they compress it. Anything fairly lightweight I should throw in it for some extra warmth? Probably using a cheap inflatable 5R pad.

like sleeping bags, it depends on the quilt.
there are quilts which are suitable for sub zero conditions.

I tried quilt and was just colder. I don't get it there's always a gap letting my warmth out.

Real red pill is a 3 season bag and add a quilt for winter

The temperature rating they list is the lowest temp you won't freeze to death at. You wouldn't be comfortable naked in that bag at 40F, you'll perish at 20F.

I mean you'll probably not die but you certainly won't be sleeping. That's a summer bag

also it might just be me but in sleeping bags i struggle sleeping when i cinch the neck tightly since i can hear my pulse the whole night because the sound goes through into the hood but i dont get this problem with quilts when using a separate down hood.

I just watched a video going in detail about this thing, it sounds great and has tons of good reviews. it's only a little bit heavier than a traditional setup but seems worth it. just expensive. definitely going to pick one of these up.

You don't need more than a beanie when there is no draft. A 1 lbs quilt is very convenient, cheap and comfortable in summer. Then in autumn or in the mountains you have to use a 3 lbs - 10 or 0F limit rated sleeping bag anyways. no quilt. More expensive and you don't want to wear it out on casual summer trips.

Yeah I've seen these videos already and wanted to check if any anon had tried it. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna grab one, after trying both quilts and sleeping bags I'm pretty sure this will be the perfect solution.

I have the 25F one, it's awesome. In summer I can let my feet breathe, in winter they go in the little pouch at the bottom. Having the quilt attach via clips is a good system.
